Thinner, but at what cost? (battery, thermals)

The honest tradeoff of going from 6.25mm to 5.5mm is battery capacity. The first-generation Air already shipped with a smaller battery than the standard iPhone 17, and the Air 2 is reportedly shaving off another ~10% of internal volume to fit the slimmer chassis. Apple is reportedly compensating with a higher-density silicon-anode battery, but the realistic outcome is that Air 2 battery life lands in the same neighborhood as the first Air — not meaningfully better, possibly slightly worse under heavy load.

Thermals are the bigger concern. The A20 Pro is a 2nm part with meaningfully more transistors than the A19 Pro, and the Air's thermal envelope has historically been tight. • You regularly use the ultrawide lens. The first Air simply does not have one.

• You need a phone today and cannot wait six months.

The discount argument is the underrated one. The first iPhone Air launched at $899 and has been on Apple's lineup for almost a year. By the time the Air 2 ships in spring 2027, the original Air should be widely available at $200-250 off.
