iPhone Duo vs Honor Magic V5: 6 differences — $1,999 vs $1,650 (5,820 mAh, 217g)

iPhone Duo vs Honor Magic V5: A20 Pro vs Snapdragon 8 Elite, $1,999 vs $1,650 (grey-import). Magic V5 lightest foldable (217g) + biggest battery (5,820 mAh). Ships since Jul 2025.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Marcus Chen

The Honor Magic V5 launched globally on July 28, 2025 — fourteen months before the iPhone Duo's Spring 2027 release — and is still the lightest and longest-battery book-style foldable on the market. Honor marketed it as the "world's thinnest foldable" at launch with an 8.8mm folded profile and 217g weight.

The Magic V5 uses Honor's silicon-carbon battery technology, which delivers 5,820 mAh — the largest battery ever shipped on a foldable at launch — without compromising thickness. The iPhone Duo ships with 4,883 mAh in a 9.2mm folded profile (240g). The Magic V5 wins on weight, battery capacity, and folded thickness. The iPhone Duo wins on silicon (A20 Pro 2nm vs Snapdragon 8 Elite), ecosystem, and software polish.

Quick recommendation:

  • Apple ecosystem + willing to wait: iPhone Duo (Spring 2027)
  • Best battery life + lightest foldable + value: Honor Magic V5 (ships now, ~$1,650 grey-import or €1,500 in Europe)
  • China + Honor ecosystem: Honor Magic V5

Why is the Honor Magic V5 still relevant in 2026?

Three reasons:

  1. No successor has shipped. Honor's "Magic V6" was rumored for July 2026 but did not materialize. The Magic V5 remains the current flagship as of September 2026.
  2. Specs still hold up. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is roughly comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 in many use cases. The silicon-carbon 5,820 mAh battery is still the largest in any foldable.
  3. European + global availability. Unlike the OPPO Find N6 or Xiaomi Mix Fold 5, the Magic V5 ships officially in Europe, Singapore, and many other markets outside China.

The Magic V5 launched at MWC Shanghai in June 2025, went on sale in China July 2, 2025, and launched globally July 28, 2025. By September 2026, it has been on sale for ~14 months.

How does the hardware compare?

Display

Both inner displays are ~7.8-7.95" OLED 120Hz. The Magic V5's inner display is 5,000 nits peak (claimed; Honor is aggressive on marketing numbers — real-world measured is closer to 3,200 nits per Stuff Singapore's testing). The iPhone Duo is 3,000 nits peak.

The cover display is where the Magic V5 wins decisively: 6.45" 120Hz vs the iPhone Duo's 5.4" 60Hz. This is the most-criticized spec on the iPhone Duo. The Magic V5's cover display feels like a regular phone when closed. The iPhone Duo's cover feels like a remote control.

Refresh rate: the Magic V5's inner display is 120Hz LTPO; the iPhone Duo's inner display is fixed 60Hz (Apple reserves ProMotion for Pro/Pro Max). The Magic V5's cover is also 120Hz. The iPhone Duo's cover is 60Hz.

Chip and performance

A20 Pro (TSMC N2, 2nm) vs Snapdragon 8 Elite (TSMC N3). Apple is one process generation ahead on silicon. The A20 Pro has:

  • ~3,400 single-core / ~9,200 multi-core Geekbench 6 (per leaks)
  • 38 TOPS NPU
  • More efficient power consumption

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is competitive on multi-core performance but trails on single-core. For real-world foldable use, the A20 Pro feels snappier. For gaming, both are excellent.

Important: the Magic V5 ships with the original Snapdragon 8 Elite (2024), not the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 (2026) or Gen 5 (2026). If Honor ships a Magic V6 refresh in late 2026 or 2027, it will get the newer chip.

RAM and storage

iPhone Duo: 12GB RAM. Magic V5: 12GB or 16GB. The Magic V5 16GB variant is meaningfully better for heavy multitasking.

Storage tiers are identical (256/512GB/1TB).

Cameras

CameraiPhone DuoHonor Magic V5
Main48MP f/1.850MP f/1.6 (larger sensor)
Ultrawide48MP f/2.250MP f/3.0 (narrower aperture)
TelephotoNone64MP 3x periscope
Front (cover)12MP16MP
Front (inner)12MP under-display8MP

The Magic V5 wins on telephoto (the iPhone Duo has none) and main camera (larger sensor, wider aperture). The iPhone Duo wins on ultrawide (higher resolution).

For video recording, the iPhone Duo is the clear winner:

  • Dolby Vision HDR recording
  • Cinematic Mode (rack focus in video)
  • ProRes support (with external storage)
  • Action Mode (gimbal-like stabilization)

The Magic V5 records 4K@60fps with gyro-EIS + OIS — good, but not at the iPhone level.

Battery and charging

This is the Magic V5's headline win:

  • Battery capacity: 5,820 mAh vs 4,883 mAh (+19% in Magic V5's favor)
  • Wired charging: 66W vs 30W (Magic V5 charges 2.2× faster)
  • Wireless charging: 50W vs 25W (Magic V5 charges 2× faster)

GSMArena's lab test (August 2025):

  • Honor Magic V5: 17h 28m video streaming / 13h 15m web browsing / 10h 11m gaming
  • iPhone Duo (per Apple keynote claims): 14-16h video streaming

The Magic V5 is best-in-class for foldable battery endurance. Honor's silicon-carbon battery technology delivers higher energy density without compromising thickness.

For buyers who prioritize battery, this is a real differentiator. For most buyers, both phones last a full day with typical use.

Durability

Both are IPX8 (water resistance, no dust rating). The Magic V5's Magic-Pen stylus works with the inner display via capacitive sensing (sold separately, ~€50). The iPhone Duo has no stylus support.

Both hinges are rated for 200,000+ folds. The iPhone Duo's hinge closes with no visible gap. The Magic V5 has a tapered gap (typical of Android foldables).

Thickness (unfolded)4.2mm4.1mm
Thickness (closed)9.2mm8.8mm
Weight240g217g
Hinge gapNoneTapered
StylusNoYes (Magic-Pen)

The Magic V5 is the lightest and thinnest book-style foldable in market. The 23g weight difference between Magic V5 (217g) and iPhone Duo (240g) is meaningful in hand and pocket.

The Magic V5 wins on portability. The iPhone Duo wins on no-gap hinge design (premium feel when closed).

How does the software compare?

iOS 27 on iPhone Duo

  • iPad apps run at native iPad resolution on the inner display
  • Two-app split view + slide-over for multitasking
  • Sidecar — use the Duo as a second display for your Mac
  • Apple Intelligence 2.0 — Gemini-backed, on-device 3B model
  • App ecosystem — best-in-class (Apple App Store)

Android 15 + MagicOS 9 on Magic V5

  • Magic Portal — drag-and-drop content across apps
  • Parallel Space — run two instances of apps (e.g., two WhatsApp accounts)
  • Magic Capsule — dynamic island-style notification system
  • Magic-Pen integration — note-taking and drawing
  • AI Eraser + AI Cutout — photo editing
  • Notes live translation — real-time translation while taking notes
  • App ecosystem — Google Play Store, no native Google apps in China

Software polish

iOS 27 on the iPhone Duo is more polished for foldable use:

  • Better optimized iPad apps for the 7.6" inner display
  • More reliable multitasking gestures
  • Better long-term software support (Apple typically supports 5-6 years vs Honor's 3-4 years)

MagicOS 9 is good but has more rough edges. The Magic V5 launched with Android 15 + MagicOS 9; Honor has not committed to a specific number of OS updates.

How does ecosystem integration compare?

iPhone Duo wins for Apple users

If you own:

  • Mac (Sidecar, Handoff, AirDrop)
  • iPad (Universal Control)
  • Apple Watch
  • AirPods
  • Apple TV
  • HomeKit

The iPhone Duo integrates seamlessly.

Magic V5 wins for Honor + Huawei users

If you own:

  • Honor Watch / Honor Earbuds
  • Honor MagicBook
  • Huawei MateBook / FreeBuds (cross-compatible)
  • Huawei MatePad

The Magic V5 integrates well within the Honor/Huawei ecosystem.

Google ecosystem

Both phones use Google services for the cloud tier (iPhone Duo via Apple Intelligence 2.0 + Gemini, Magic V5 via MagicOS 9 + Google Play Services). The Magic V5 has the advantage of native Google integration since it runs Android. The iPhone Duo uses Gemini via Apple's licensing deal.

How does pricing compare?

CurrencyiPhone DuoHonor Magic V5
USD$1,999~$1,650 grey-import (€1,500 / ~$1,700)
EUR€1,949€1,500 (12/256GB) / €1,600 (16/512GB) / €1,700 (16/1TB)
GBP£1,849£1,299 (12/256GB) / £1,399 (16/512GB) / £1,499 (16/1TB)
CNY (¥)¥14,999¥8,999 (12/256GB) / ¥9,999 (16/512GB) / ¥10,999 (16/1TB)
SGDS$2,799S$2,099

The Magic V5 is $300-400 cheaper than the iPhone Duo at every storage tier. In Europe, the Magic V5 is €400-450 cheaper. In China, the Magic V5 is ¥4,000-5,000 cheaper.

The pricing caveat: Honor is not officially sold in the US through carriers or Honor US (Honor pulled out of the US market in 2020). US buyers must purchase via grey-import channels (eBay, Giztop, Trading Shenzhen), with no US warranty and limited carrier band support on Verizon/AT&T.

How does availability compare?

Who should buy the iPhone Duo?

Buy the iPhone Duo if:

  • You're in the Apple ecosystem
  • You want the best foldable silicon (A20 Pro)
  • You want the best video recording (Dolby Vision, ProRes)
  • You want the longest software support
  • You want US carrier + warranty support
  • You can wait until Spring 2027

Who should buy the Honor Magic V5?

Buy the Honor Magic V5 if:

  • You want the lightest foldable (217g)
  • You want the longest battery life (5,820 mAh)
  • You want fast charging (66W wired)
  • You want a better cover display (6.45" 120Hz)
  • You want a telephoto camera (3x optical)
  • You want stylus support (Magic-Pen)
  • You're in Europe, UK, Singapore, or Asia-Pacific (with carrier support)
  • You want a foldable now (14 months on sale)
  • You want to save $300-400

Final verdict

The Honor Magic V5 and iPhone Duo serve slightly different priorities. The Magic V5 wins on hardware value (lighter, longer battery, faster charging, telephoto, better cover display) and price ($300-400 less). The iPhone Duo wins on silicon, software polish, ecosystem integration, and long-term support.

For European and Asian buyers outside Apple's ecosystem who want the best hardware value, the Magic V5 is the right choice. For Apple ecosystem users, the iPhone Duo is the consideration — but only if you're willing to wait until Spring 2027.

For US buyers, the iPhone Duo is the better option once it ships — the iPhone Duo will work on all US carriers with full warranty support, while the Magic V5 is grey-import only with limited US carrier compatibility.

The Honor Magic V5 is one of the most underrated foldables of the past 18 months. If Honor ships a Magic V6 with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in late 2026 or 2027, it will be even more competitive.
