iPhone Duo vs Pixel 11 Pro Fold: 7 differences — $1,999 vs $1,899 (Sept 9)

iPhone Duo vs Pixel 11 Pro Fold (a.k.a. Pixel Fold 3): 7.8" vs 8.0" inner, A20 Pro 2nm vs Tensor G6 2nm, $1,999 vs $1,899. Pixel IP68 (first dust+water foldable). Ships now vs Spring 2027.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Marcus Chen

Google's third-gen foldable shipped on August 20, 2026 — five days before Apple's iPhone Duo keynote — and it is the most direct competitor to Apple's $1,999 foldable. Google repositioned the line from "Pixel Fold 3" to "Pixel 11 Pro Fold" at Made by Google 2026 (August 12), aligning the foldable name with the Pixel 11 series. The new name caused some confusion in pre-launch coverage; both names refer to the same device.

The two foldables are remarkably close on price ($100 apart) and timing (both announced in the August-September 2026 window). But they differ meaningfully on silicon (Tensor G6 vs A20 Pro), display (8.0" vs 7.6"), durability (IP68 vs IPX8), and ecosystem integration. Here is the head-to-head.

Quick recommendation:

  • Apple ecosystem (iMessage, AirDrop, Mac, Apple Watch): iPhone Duo (wait for Spring 2027)
  • Best Android foldable + AI integration + dust resistance: Pixel 11 Pro Fold (ships now)
  • Most polished Android foldable experience: Pixel 11 Pro Fold

How does the hardware compare?

Display

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a larger inner display (8.0" vs 7.6") and a much larger cover display (6.5" vs 5.4"). The 5.4" cover on the iPhone Duo is one of the most-criticized specs — it's smaller than every competitor's cover display. The Pixel's 6.5" cover is closer to a regular phone experience when closed.

Brightness: the Pixel 11 Pro Fold reaches 3,600 nits peak (Tom's Guide measured 2,982 nits in real-world testing — still the brightest of any foldable). The iPhone Duo is rated at 3,000 nits peak. Both are excellent in direct sunlight.

Refresh rate: the Pixel is 120Hz LTPO on the inner display; the iPhone Duo is fixed 60Hz on the inner display (Apple reserved ProMotion 120Hz for Pro/Pro Max). The Pixel's cover display is also 120Hz, while the iPhone Duo's cover is 60Hz — a meaningful gap if you use the cover display frequently.

Chip and performance

Both chips are on TSMC N2 (2nm). The A20 Pro has a clear lead in single-core CPU performance (per Geekbench 6 leaks, ~3,400 single / ~9,200 multi). The Tensor G6 is Google's first TSMC-made Tensor (prior generations were Samsung Exynos-based) and brings real improvements in NPU performance, but raw CPU is roughly comparable to Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 — a step behind A20 Pro.

For real-world foldable use (multitasking, app launching, browser scrolling), the A20 Pro feels snappier. For AI-specific tasks (Gemini integration, on-device Magic Capture, Circle to Search), the Tensor G6 is optimized and competitive.

RAM and storage

iPhone Duo ships with 12GB RAM. Pixel 11 Pro Fold ships with 16GB. The Pixel's extra RAM matters for heavy multitasking — split-screen with multiple apps, browser tabs, and Gemini sidebar all at once.

Storage tiers are identical (256/512GB/1TB).

Cameras

Both phones have a 48MP main camera with similar sensors. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold adds a 5x periscope telephoto (10.8MP) which the iPhone Duo lacks. The Pixel's ultrawide is 10.5MP vs the iPhone Duo's 48MP ultrawide.

Camera comparison by use case:

  • Main daytime photos: Tie. Both produce excellent, color-accurate photos.
  • Low light: Pixel wins (Google's Night Sight is best-in-class).
  • Zoom: Pixel wins (5x telephoto is real, iPhone Duo has no telephoto).
  • Ultrawide: iPhone Duo wins (higher resolution, better macro).
  • Selfies: Tie (both have 10-12MP front cameras).
  • Video: iPhone Duo wins (Dolby Vision recording, Cinematic Mode).

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold's Magic Capture (auto-pulls sharp stills from video) and Camera Looks (custom film styles) are real software wins. Tom's Guide and PetaPixel both noted that the ultrawide and telephoto are carried over unchanged from Pixel 10 Pro Fold — only the main sensor got a hardware upgrade.

Battery and charging

Capacity is similar (~4,800-4,883 mAh). Wired charging is identical (30W). Wireless charging is identical (25W).

Real-world battery life:

  • iPhone Duo: 14-16 hours inner-display video
  • Pixel 11 Pro Fold: 13-15 hours inner-display video

The iPhone Duo edges out slightly due to A20 Pro efficiency.

Durability

This is the Pixel's headline win: IP68 — the first mass-market foldable with both dust and water resistance. The iPhone Duo is IPX8 (water only, no dust rating). For buyers in dusty environments (deserts, beaches, construction sites), this is meaningful.

Both phones claim hinge ratings of 200,000+ folds. Google's new "gearless" hinge on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold widens the bend radius and Google claims 3× more durable than Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The iPhone Duo's custom hinge has no visible gap when closed (the Pixel has a tapered gap, similar to Samsung).

The iPhone Duo is meaningfully thinner (0.9mm unfolded, 0.9mm closed). The Pixel is 1g lighter (essentially identical weight).

How does the software compare?

iOS 27 on iPhone Duo

  • iPad apps run at native iPad resolution on the inner display
  • Two-app split view + slide-over for multitasking
  • Sidecar — use the Duo as a second display for your Mac
  • Universal Clipboard, Handoff, AirDrop — seamless with Apple devices
  • Apple Intelligence 2.0 — Gemini-backed for cloud, on-device 3B model

Android 17 on Pixel 11 Pro Fold

  • Improved app bubbles, drag-and-drop, split screen — best Android foldable UI
  • Instant View — quickly resize apps without going to settings
  • Gemini sidebar — persistent AI assistant accessible from any app
  • Magic Capture — auto-pulls sharp stills from video
  • Circle to Search — visual search from any screen
  • Dual Screen Interpreter — translation using both screens

AI integration

This is the most meaningful software difference:

Pixel 11 Pro Fold has Gemini Intelligence throughout the OS. The persistent Gemini sidebar, Magic Capture, AI photo editing, and Circle to Search are all powered by Google's Gemini 2.5 model — and the integration is seamless because Google controls both the OS and the AI.

iPhone Duo has Apple Intelligence 2.0, which uses Google Gemini for cloud tasks but layers Apple's on-device 3B model and Private Cloud Compute on top. The result is competitive AI but the integration is less seamless — Apple is licensing Gemini, not owning it.

The Pixel has a real AI advantage. The iPhone has a privacy architecture advantage (Private Cloud Compute + on-device first).

How does ecosystem integration compare?

iPhone Duo — Apple ecosystem wins

If you own any of:

  • Mac (Sidecar, Handoff, AirDrop)
  • iPad (Universal Control, Handoff)
  • Apple Watch (auto-unlock, fitness sync)
  • AirPods (automatic switching, spatial audio)

  • You want the best foldable silicon (A20 Pro)
  • You want the best video recording and Dolby Vision
  • You prefer iOS over Android
  • You want no-gap hinge design
  • You can wait until Spring 2027

Who should buy the Pixel 11 Pro Fold?

Buy the Pixel 11 Pro Fold if:

  • You want a foldable right now
  • You value AI integration (Gemini Intelligence is best-in-class)
  • You want telephoto camera (5x optical)

  • You prefer Android over iOS
  • You want longer software support (7 years)
  • You want to save $100

Final verdict

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold and the iPhone Duo are remarkably close competitors — close enough that the choice is dominated by ecosystem and timing, not specs.

For most buyers, the decision is:

  • Own a Mac / iPhone / Apple Watch: wait for iPhone Duo (Spring 2027)
  • No Apple ecosystem / want it now: buy Pixel 11 Pro Fold

The Pixel has 7 wins on our count, the iPhone has 8. The Pixel's wins are bigger (AI integration, telephoto, IP68, now vs 7 months from now) but the iPhone's wins are in critical categories for Apple users (silicon, video, hinge design, Mac integration).

If Google brought the Pixel 11 Pro Fold to the Apple ecosystem (it won't), it would be the obvious winner. Since it doesn't, the choice remains "which ecosystem are you in" — and which timing works for you.
