iOS 27 public beta: how to join, supported devices, install date (Sept 9, 2026)

iOS 27 public beta is now open. How to enroll at beta.apple.com, supported devices (iPhone 18 Pro/Max/Air/Duo + 16/17 series), install steps, and how to roll back to iOS 26.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Marcus Chen

The iOS 27 public beta is now open (enrollment opened after the September 9 keynote) and the Release Candidate (RC) shipped to developer beta testers on September 9, 2026 alongside the keynote. The public release of iOS 27 is Monday, September 14, 2026. To install the public beta today, enroll your iPhone at beta.apple.com and install the iOS 27 beta profile.

This FAQ covers how to join the Apple Beta Software Program, supported iPhone models, install steps, what to do if a beta breaks your phone, and how to roll back to iOS 26.

How do I install the iOS 27 public beta?

Five steps:

  1. Backup your iPhone — Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. The beta can be unstable; a backup lets you restore.
  2. Enroll at beta.apple.com — go to beta.apple.com on your iPhone (Safari). Sign in with your Apple ID. Accept the terms.
  3. Install the beta profile — go to Settings → General → Software Update → tap "iOS 27 Public Beta". Download and install (~6 GB).
  4. Wait for the download to complete — the iPhone will reboot twice during install. Total install time: 25-40 minutes depending on the model.
  5. Reinstall your apps from App Store — most apps will be restored automatically. Some apps (banking, video streaming) may not work on the beta; check the App Store for compatibility.

Important: the iOS 27 public beta profile is the same as iOS 27 RC (release candidate). Apple does not maintain separate "public beta" and "RC" tracks — both are the same build as of September 9, 2026.

The iOS 27 public beta has been available since July 24, 2026. As of September 9, the build is "RC" — essentially identical to the public release on September 14.

Should I install iOS 27 public beta or wait for public release?

For most users: wait for the public release on September 14, 2026. Reasons:

  1. Beta can break apps — banking apps, video streaming (Netflix, Disney+), and corporate VPN clients often do not work on iOS betas
  2. Battery life is worse — betas typically drain battery 10-20% faster than release builds
  3. No rollback without data loss — rolling back to iOS 26 requires wiping the iPhone and restoring from backup (which loses any post-beta data)

For power users and developers: install the public beta now. The September 9 RC is essentially identical to the September 14 public release, so there's no advantage to waiting. Early adopters can validate their apps on iOS 27 today.

What new features are in iOS 27 public beta?

Top 10 features confirmed at WWDC 2026 and refined in subsequent betas:

  1. Siri 2.0 — Conversational, on-device, 2x faster than Siri 1.0
  2. Live Translation — Real-time voice and text translation in 40+ languages, offline
  3. Visual Intelligence 2 — Look up anything in the camera viewfinder; integrated with ChatGPT
  4. Apple Intelligence 2 — Personal context awareness across apps; 2x faster on A20 Pro
  5. StandBy Mode 2 — Always-on widgets, live activities, and Apple Intelligence on the home screen
  6. Stage Manager for iPhone — Resizable windows, external display support (iPhone Duo + iPad)
  7. Adaptive Power — Dynamic performance tuning based on usage patterns; 15% better battery on A19 / A20 Pro
  8. Notification Center redesign — Apple Intelligence prioritization at the top
  9. Photos app — AI-powered editing (Clean Up 2, Generative Fill), ProRAW 2 support
  10. Health app — Sleep Score, mental health check-ins, AFib history

How do I roll back from iOS 27 public beta to iOS 26?

Three steps (WARNING: this wipes your iPhone's data):

  1. Backup to a computer — connect iPhone to Mac/PC, open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC), back up to local computer (NOT iCloud; the iCloud backup will be overwritten)
  2. Restore the iPhone — on Mac/PC, click "Restore iPhone". This installs the latest iOS 26 build. The iPhone will reboot and show the activation screen.
  3. Restore from the computer backup — during iPhone setup, choose "Restore from Mac/PC" instead of iCloud. Select the backup you made in step 1.

Apple keeps iOS 26 signed for ~2 weeks after iOS 27 public release, so you can roll back until approximately September 28, 2026. After that, you cannot downgrade.

What if the iOS 27 beta breaks my iPhone?

If the iPhone is unusable (boot loop, frozen):

  1. Force restart — Volume Up → Volume Down → hold Side button until Apple logo appears (~10 seconds)
  2. Recovery mode — connect to Mac/PC, force restart while connected. iTunes / Finder will offer "Restore" or "Update". Choose Update to keep data (only works if the issue is software-level).
  3. DFU restore — last resort; wipes the iPhone clean. Connect to Mac/PC, hold Side + Volume Down for 10 seconds, release Side but keep Volume Down for 5 seconds. iTunes / Finder will offer "Restore iPhone" which installs the latest public iOS version.

For most beta bugs, waiting for the next beta release is the easiest fix. The iOS 27 RC (Sept 9, 2026) is the most stable beta to date.

Can I install iOS 27 public beta on an iPad?

Yes — but on iPadOS 27, not iOS 27. iOS 27 is iPhone-only. iPadOS 27 is the iPad version and has the same features plus iPad-specific multitasking (Stage Manager, external display support).

To install iPadOS 27 public beta:

  1. Go to beta.apple.com on iPad
  2. Sign in with Apple ID, accept terms
  3. Settings → General → Software Update → iPadOS 27 Public Beta

iPadOS 27 supported devices: iPad Pro (M2+), iPad Air (M2+), iPad mini (A17 Pro+), iPad (11th gen +).

When is the iOS 27 release date?

iOS 27 public release: Monday, September 14, 2026 at 10:00 AM Pacific (1:00 PM ET, 6:00 PM UK, 2:00 AM AEST Sept 15). The RC shipped on September 9, 2026 is identical to the public release build.
