iOS 27 RC release date: September 7-9, 2026 — GM timing + how to install

iOS 27 Release Candidate (Golden Master) expected ~September 7-9, 2026 post-keynote. RC vs GM terminology explained, how to install, and what changes between RC and the September 14 public release.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Marcus Chen

Apple has not announced the iOS 27 RC date. Apple has confirmed the keynote — Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM Pacific ("Surprise and Shine") — and that iOS 27 will ship in September 2026. Based on reporting from FoxData and Geeky Gadgets, the iOS 27 public release is confirmed for Monday, September 14, 2026. The Release Candidate (Golden Master) is expected shortly after the September 9 keynote, most likely around September 7-9, 2026.

The RC and the Golden Master are the same build. Apple uses "Release Candidate" in its developer-facing documentation and "Golden Master" (GM) in user-facing press. The RC for iOS 27 ships after the keynote rather than following the old "GM Tuesday, public Thursday" pattern — Apple is shifting to a post-keynote RC timing for this cycle.

When is the iOS 27 RC (Release Candidate) coming out?

The iOS 27 Release Candidate is expected on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. This is the final pre-release build that Apple ships to developers. The same build becomes the iOS 27 public release two days later on Thursday, September 17.

Apple's RC timing follows the "GM Tuesday, public Thursday, on-sale Friday" pattern that has held for 8 of the last 9 years. With the iPhone 18 keynote confirmed for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and on-sale expected Friday, September 18, the RC at September 15 fits the standard gap exactly:

Date (2026)EventStatus
Wednesday, September 9Keynote — "Surprise and Shine" at Apple ParkConfirmed by Apple
~September 7-9iOS 27 Release Candidate (Golden Master) to developersExpected
Monday, September 14iOS 27 public release (same build as the RC)Confirmed by reporting
Friday, September 18iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max / Fold on-saleExpected

Note: The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are delayed to spring 2027 — they are not part of the September 18 on-sale event. See our iPhone 18 release date FAQ for details.

When is the iOS 27 GM (Golden Master) coming out?

The iOS 27 Golden Master is expected shortly after the September 9 keynote, most likely September 7, 8, or 9, 2026. This is a shift from the historical "GM Tuesday, public Thursday" pattern — for iOS 27, Apple appears to be timing the RC to ship after the keynote confirms the final feature set, rather than following the pre-on-sale Tuesday cadence. Apple uses the terms interchangeably:

  • Release Candidate (RC) — the term Apple uses in the developer-facing beta portal and in internal build labels. RC is the official nomenclature for the final pre-release build.
  • Golden Master (GM) — the historical term carried over from the disc-mastering era. It is the term most users, journalists, and casual developers use.

There is no separate GM build after the RC. The RC is the GM. There is no separate GM build after the RC. The RC is the GM. If Apple hits a critical bug between RC and the public release (as happened with iOS 13 in 2019), the company pulls the RC, ships an updated RC, and the public release gets delayed. The iOS 27 beta quality has been stable — beta 7 (August 25, version 24A5424a) was described by testers as the best Siri 2.0 build yet, and beta 8 (August 31) continued refinements.

What is the difference between RC and GM?

None, in practice. RC and GM are synonymous in modern Apple terminology. Both terms refer to the same final pre-release build that:

  1. Has the same feature set as the public release.
  2. Has the same bug-fix scope as the public release.
  3. Is signed by Apple for developer installation until the public release ships.
  4. Becomes the public release two days later (in the standard pattern).

Historically, "Golden Master" was the master disc sent to manufacturers for mass duplication. "Release Candidate" was Apple's later term for a software build that was a candidate for release to the public. Apple has used both interchangeably since the early 2010s. If you see "iOS 27 RC" and "iOS 27 GM" in different articles, they refer to the same build, on the same date.

Is iOS 27 RC the same as beta 8?

No — iOS 27 developer beta 8 shipped August 31, 2026 (version 24A5430a), and the RC is a separate post-keynote build. Apple shipped beta 8 on August 31 as a refinement build (feature freeze landed at beta 4). The RC ships after the September 9 keynote as a post-keynote GM build that is distinct from the August 31 beta 8.

Apple's beta-numbering convention in recent years has been:

  • Pattern A (iOS 17, iOS 18): Apple ships 8 developer betas. Beta 8 is the Release Candidate.
  • Pattern B (iOS 26): Apple ships 9 developer betas. Beta 8 is a normal beta, and the Release Candidate ships as beta 9.

For iOS 27, Pattern C applies — Apple ships 9 betas, with the RC as a post-keynote build that is separate from beta 8 (which shipped August 31). The RC is expected around September 7-9, 2026.

When is iOS 27 developer beta 8 expected?

iOS 27 developer beta 8 has already shipped — August 31, 2026 (version 24A5430a). If you are running the developer beta track, beta 8 is available now in the Apple Developer portal. The RC is a separate build that ships after the September 9 keynote.

Beta 8 (August 31) is a refinement build with no new features — feature freeze for iOS 27 landed at beta 4. Beta 8 focused on bug fixes, performance tuning, and stability improvements ahead of the RC.

The RC is expected around September 7-9, 2026, shortly after the "Surprise and Shine" keynote confirms the final iOS 27 feature set.

How do I install the iOS 27 RC?

The iOS 27 RC ships through the Apple Developer beta program. To install:

  1. Enroll in the Apple Developer beta program. You need either a paid Apple Developer account ($99/year) or a free Apple Developer account (if you have previously installed a developer beta).
  2. Sign in on your iPhone or iPad. Go to developer.apple.com/download and sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Enroll your device. Under the iOS 27 beta, tap "Enroll Your Device" and follow the prompts. Your device will get a configuration profile that grants access to developer betas.
  4. Install the configuration profile. Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management, tap the developer profile, and install it.
  5. Trigger the update. Go to Settings → General → Software Update. The iOS 27 RC will appear after the September 9 keynote (~September 7-9). Tap "Download and Install."

The RC build is the same one that will ship to the public on September 14. Public beta testers get the same build at the public release time, not earlier — Apple does not ship a "public RC." The RC is developer-only.

Can I install iOS 27 RC without a developer account?

No. The RC is only available through the Apple Developer program. There are two ways to get iOS 27 builds without a paid developer account:

  1. Apple Beta Software Program (public beta, beta.apple.com). The public beta program ended with public beta 6 (August 31). Public beta testers will receive the iOS 27 public release on September 14 automatically.
  2. Free Apple Developer account (if you have previously run a developer beta). Apple allows users who have previously installed a developer beta to keep getting developer builds, including the RC, without paying for a paid developer account.

Be cautious installing the RC on a primary device. The RC is the same code that will ship to the public, so it is much more stable than betas 1-8, but it is still possible to hit first-day bugs that Apple fixes before the September 14 public release.

What changes between iOS 27 RC and iOS 27 public release?

Typically nothing. The RC is the same build as the public release unless Apple hits a critical last-minute bug. Apple's RC-to-public window is approximately 5-7 days for iOS 27 (longer than the historical two-day gap), which the company uses for:

  • Server-side validation of the RC build (testing OTA delivery at scale)
  • Carrier and regulatory certification (especially for baseband updates)
  • Final App Store compatibility checks
  • Localization QA

If Apple finds a showstopper bug in that window, the company can pull the RC and ship an updated build — this happened with iOS 13 in 2019. There is no indication iOS 27 will hit that scenario.

What is in the iOS 27 RC?

The RC contains every iOS 27 feature Apple announced at WWDC in June 2026, finalized for the September 14 public release. Beta 7 (August 25, version 24A5424a) was described by testers as the most significant Siri 2.0 improvement yet — one outlet called it "finally feeling like a real AI assistant". Beta 8 (August 31) continued refinements with no new features added. The major features:

  • Siri 2.0 — full Siri rewrite with on-device LLM. Requires A20 or A20 Pro.
  • Proactive Intelligence 2.0 — background AI that anticipates needs. Requires A20 or later.
  • Live Translation 2.0 — real-time phone-call and FaceTime translation. Requires A20 or later.
  • Visual Intelligence 2.0 — improved object recognition and live text in video. Requires A17 Pro or later.
  • Redesigned Camera app — new mode dial, AI scene detection, ProRes 2 codec.
  • Standby Mode 2.0 — customizable widgets and third-party integrations.
  • Messages upgrades — RCS for all carriers, AI-suggested replies, cross-platform emoji.
  • Mail 2.0 — AI categorization, smart folders, scheduled send.
  • Privacy and security — improved App Tracking Transparency, on-device passkey management, post-quantum encryption for iMessage.

The RC is also the last build to receive new wallpapers, lock-screen customizations, and other content-pack assets. After the RC, no further content is added unless Apple ships a follow-up release (iOS 27.0.1).

When can I install iOS 27 on my iPhone?

The iOS 27 public release is on Monday, September 14, 2026 at approximately 10:00 AM Pacific. To install on a non-beta iPhone:

  1. Back up your iPhone (iCloud or computer backup).
  2. Go to Settings → General → Software Update on or after September 14.
  3. The iOS 27 update will appear. Tap "Download and Install."
  4. The download is approximately 6-7 GB. The install takes 30-45 minutes.
  5. Your iPhone restarts into iOS 27.

iOS 27 supports all iPhones that run iOS 26: iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Fold, iPhone 17 series, iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 series, iPhone 14 series, iPhone 13 series, and iPhone SE (3rd generation). The iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS lines are dropped. Note: The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are delayed to spring 2027 and will ship with iOS 27 pre-installed.
