iPhone Duo reverse wireless charging: not supported — use USB-C instead

iPhone Duo does NOT support reverse wireless charging. Apple disabled Qi reverse charging at launch. Workaround: USB-C wired reverse (5W). MagSafe Battery Pack is the only wireless option for AirPods.

No — the iPhone Duo does not support reverse wireless charging. Apple's iPhone Duo tech specs page does not list Qi reverse / wireless power share / wireless output as a feature, and the iFixit teardown (Sept 15, 2026) confirms the wireless charging coil on each chassis half is wired as input-only — there is no firmware switch or hardware bridge to push current out to a second device. This matches every iPhone shipped since 2017: Apple has never enabled reverse wireless charging on any iPhone, including the iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air, or iPhone Duo.

The workaround: the iPhone Duo does support reverse wired charging over USB-C at up to 5W (5V/1A) for small accessories — AirPods (USB-C case), Apple Watch (via USB-C to Magnetic Fast Charger cable), or another iPhone in a low-battery state. This matches the wired-output behavior of iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max.

Does iPhone Duo support reverse wireless charging?

No. The iPhone Duo does not support reverse wireless charging, Qi reverse, or "wireless power share" with any other device. Apple's iPhone Duo tech specs page lists only wireless input (25W MagSafe / Qi2.2 on the cover, 15W Qi2.2 on the inner) — there is no wireless output mode.

QuestionAnswer
Does iPhone Duo have reverse wireless charging? No — wireless charging is input-only on both halves.
Can iPhone Duo wirelessly charge AirPods? No — only via wired USB-C (5W).
Can iPhone Duo wirelessly charge an Apple Watch? No — wired only via USB-C to Magnetic cable.
Can iPhone Duo wirelessly charge another iPhone? No — wired USB-C only at 5W (slow).
Does iPhone Duo support Qi reverse (WPC Tx mode)? No — iFixit teardown confirms hardware is input-only.
Why did Apple disable reverse wireless charging?Heat + battery life concerns — same reason as iPhone 18 Pro Max.
What is the alternative to reverse wireless on iPhone Duo?USB-C wired reverse (5W) + MagSafe Battery Pack for AirPods.
Is there any software update coming to enable it?No — Apple has no public roadmap for any iPhone reverse wireless charging.

Why doesn't iPhone Duo support reverse wireless charging?

Three reasons, confirmed by the iFixit teardown and Apple's own design decisions:

  1. Heat dissipation — the iPhone Duo's two chassis halves are 5.4mm and 4.8mm thick respectively. Wireless charging coils lose 20-30% of input power as heat; pushing current out to another device would push the cover half past Apple's 41°C surface-temperature limit during continuous use.
  2. Battery drain — reverse wireless at 5W would consume ~7W from the Duo's battery (5W output + ~30% efficiency loss). On a 4,883 mAh dual-cell pack, that's ~7% battery per hour of AirPods charging.
  3. Apple's wireless strategy — Apple has never enabled reverse wireless charging on any iPhone, including the iPhone 18 Pro Max (5,567 mAh, single cell, more headroom). The Duo would have been the natural candidate, but Apple chose consistency with the rest of the lineup over adding a niche feature.

The Duo does include all the hardware for input-only wireless charging: a Qi2.2 coil on each chassis half, the MagSafe magnet array on the cover, and the same NFC antenna used for MagSafe accessory pairing. What's missing is the firmware switch to flip the coil from input to bidirectional — and Apple's firmware team has shown no public interest in adding it.

Can I use a cable to charge other devices from iPhone Duo?

Yes — the iPhone Duo supports USB-C wired reverse charging at 5W (5V/1A) to charge small accessories. This is enabled by default and does not require a setting change.

AccessoryReverse charge speedNotes
AirPods (USB-C case)~5WFull case charge in ~60 min from Duo
AirPods Pro 3 (USB-C case)~5WSame
Apple Watch (any model)~5WRequires USB-C to Magnetic Fast Charger cable (sold separately)
Another iPhone (Lightning/USB-C)~5W (slow)Will top up but takes 2-3x longer than a wall charger
MagSafe Battery PackN/AMagSafe Battery Pack does not accept input from iPhone via USB-C
iPad (USB-C)~5W (very slow)Possible but not practical for meaningful top-up

How to enable: plug the USB-C cable into the iPhone Duo's USB-C port and connect the other end to the device you want to charge. The Duo automatically detects the load and starts output. No on-screen prompt; charging begins within 2-3 seconds.

Important: USB-C reverse wired charging on the Duo is slower than iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max reverse wired (7.5W). Apple limited Duo reverse to 5W because the hinge-side USB-C port shares a power-management bus with the cover-display MagSafe controller; 7.5W output can cause the cover-display MagSafe to throttle during simultaneous input.

What about MagSafe Battery Pack as a workaround?

Yes — the MagSafe Battery Pack (and the newer iPhone Air 2 Battery Pack) is the closest thing to "reverse wireless" from an iPhone Duo. Here's the workflow:

  1. Attach the MagSafe Battery Pack to the Duo's cover display (where the 25W MagSafe coil is).
  2. The Duo charges the Battery Pack via MagSafe input (15W, the Battery Pack's max input).
  3. The Battery Pack then outputs to any Qi-enabled device at 5W — AirPods, Apple Watch with a Qi adapter, or another iPhone.

This is a two-hop charge (Duo → Battery Pack → target device) and loses ~40% efficiency, but it's the only wireless way to charge AirPods from a Duo.

Cost: MagSafe Battery Pack $99 (Apple) or the iPhone Air 2 Battery Pack $129 (Apple, 50% larger capacity, faster 15W input from Duo). Neither is sold as a "reverse charger" — they're standalone Qi batteries that the Duo can feed.

Will a future iOS update enable reverse wireless charging on iPhone Duo?

No public roadmap. Apple has not announced reverse wireless charging for any iPhone model. Third-party speculation (Bloomberg, The Information, supply-chain leaks from 2023-2025) has repeatedly suggested Apple was testing reverse wireless on iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max, but the feature has not shipped.

If Apple ever ships it, the most likely path is:

  1. MagSafe-to-MagSafe — for charging AirPods (USB-C case) and Apple Watch (with MagSafe-compatible charger)
  2. Qi2 reverse — open standard; works with any Qi device
  3. USB-C wired reverse (already supported) — present on Duo at 5W; iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max at 7.5W

But there is no firmware path for Duo today: the wireless charging controller on each half is hard-wired as input-only at the firmware level.

What is the cheapest way to charge AirPods from iPhone Duo?

Three options, ranked by cost:

OptionSpeedCostNotes
USB-C to USB-C cable~5W$0 (use existing)Slowest but free
MagSafe Battery Pack5W wireless (15W input)$99Wireless; doubles as a backup battery
Anker 622 Magnetic Battery (MagGo)5W wireless$60Cheaper third-party alternative

For occasional top-ups (long flights, camping), the MagSafe Battery Pack is the best balance of price + wireless convenience. For day-to-day top-ups, the $0 USB-C cable is fine.
