What Apple didn't announce Sept 9: M5 iPad Pro (Oct), MacBook Neo (late 2026), AirPods Pro 3 — full roadmap

Apple didn't announce Sept 9: Vision Pro 2, Apple TV 4K refresh, HomePod with display. Coming: M5 iPad Pro (Oct), MacBook Neo ($700), AirPods Pro 3 (shipping). Full 2026-2027 roadmap.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Marcus Chen

Apple's "Surprise and Shine" keynote on September 9, 2026 covered iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, AirPods Pro 3 (briefly), and iOS 27 release timing. It did not cover the M5 iPad Pro refresh, MacBook Neo, Vision Pro 2, Apple TV 4K refresh, or HomePod with display. Here's what didn't get announced — and when to expect each.

What Apple DID announce Sept 9

Quick recap:

  • iPhone Air: $1,099 starting, ships Sept 18 (pre-order Sept 12)
  • iPhone 18 Pro: $1,199 starting, ships Sept 18
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: $1,299 starting, ships Sept 18
  • iPhone Duo: $1,999 starting, ships Spring 2027
  • Apple Watch Series 12: $399 starting, ships Sept 18
  • Apple Watch Ultra 4: $799 starting, ships Sept 18
  • AirPods Pro 3: $249, already shipping since Sept 19, 2025 (briefly mentioned)
  • iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27: ships Sept 14, 2026 (iPadOS, watchOS, visionOS roll out Sept 15-22)

That's a focused keynote. Apple saved the other product categories for separate events or direct launches.

What Apple did NOT announce Sept 9

1. M5 iPad Pro (expected October 2026)

The M5 iPad Pro refresh was expected at WWDC 2026 in June, then delayed to September, then to October. Per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman (September 7, 2026 Power On newsletter), the M5 iPad Pro will launch in a dedicated October event.

Expected specs:

  • M5 chip (vs M4 in current iPad Pro)
  • 16GB RAM standard (vs 8GB base now)
  • Tandem OLED display (same as M4 iPad Pro)
  • 11-inch and 13-inch models
  • Apple Intelligence 2.0 with M5 NPU (38 TOPS)
  • New Magic Keyboard with function row
  • Apple Pencil Pro 2 with haptic feedback

Expected pricing: $999 (11-inch 256GB) / $1,299 (13-inch 256GB). Same as M4 iPad Pro.

Why it wasn't at the Sept 9 keynote: Apple historically separates iPhone + Apple Watch events from iPad + Mac events. The September event is the consumer launch; the October event is the productivity/creative launch.

2. MacBook Neo (expected late 2026 / early 2027)

The MacBook Neo is Apple's long-rumored sub-$1,000 laptop aimed at the education market. Per Gurman (August 2026 Power On) and 9to5Mac reporting, the MacBook Neo will launch in late 2026 or Q1 2027.

Expected specs:

  • A18 Pro chip (vs M-series in MacBook Air) — the same chip as iPhone 16 Pro
  • 8GB RAM (educational baseline)
  • 256GB SSD
  • 12-inch Liquid Retina display (smaller than MacBook Air's 13-inch)
  • 1080p FaceTime camera
  • Two USB-C ports (one on each side)
  • No MagSafe, no HDMI, no SD card slot
  • No fan (passive cooling, like iPad)

Expected pricing:

  • $699 for education channel (K-12, college students)
  • $799 for consumer channel
  • $649 for bulk education purchases (50+ units)

Why it wasn't at the Sept 9 keynote: Apple wants a dedicated education launch event for the MacBook Neo, similar to the May 2018 event where Apple launched the iPad with Apple Pencil for education. The event will likely be in January-February 2027 alongside Apple's Q1 earnings.

What it competes with: Chromebooks in the K-12 market (which dominate with ~65% share) and low-end Windows laptops in the college market. Apple's education market share has fallen from 20% (2018) to ~12% (2026). The MacBook Neo is Apple's attempt to win back the K-12 market.

3. Vision Pro 2 (status uncertain — likely 2027)

Vision Pro 2 was expected to launch alongside the M5 iPad Pro in October 2026, but per multiple reports (Gurman, The Information's Wayne Ma), the Vision Pro 2 has been delayed.

Reasons for the delay:

  1. visionOS 27 needs more development time — the new visionOS is the first version designed for a mass-market headset, not a developer kit
  2. R2 chip yield issues — Apple's second-generation spatial computing chip is reportedly struggling at TSMC's N3E node
  3. Display cost — the micro-OLED displays are still ~$400 per pair, making the Vision Pro 2 hard to price below $2,000

Expected specs (when it ships):

  • R2 chip (vs R1 in original Vision Pro)
  • M5 co-processor for Apple Intelligence 2.0
  • micro-OLED 4K per eye (same as original, but more efficient)
  • Lighter design (~400g vs 650g original)
  • External battery pack with longer life (3-4 hours vs 2 hours)
  • visionOS 27 with new multitasking model

Expected pricing: $1,999 (vs $3,499 for original Vision Pro). Apple needs to hit the $1,999 sweet spot for consumer adoption.

Expected launch window: WWDC 2027 (June) or later 2027.

4. Apple TV 4K refresh (status uncertain)

The Apple TV 4K has not been refreshed since 2022 (the A15 Bionic model). A 2026 refresh is rumored but not confirmed.

Expected specs (if it ships):

  • A17 Pro or A18 chip
  • 128GB / 256GB storage options
  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Thread border router + Matter support
  • Camera for FaceTime (some reports)
  • tvOS 27 with Apple Intelligence 2.0 features

Expected pricing: $149 / $199 (128GB / 256GB). Same as current generation.

Expected launch window: Late 2026 or early 2027, possibly bundled with the MacBook Neo launch event.

5. HomePod with display (rumored, delayed)

The HomePod with display is Apple's long-rumored 7-inch smart home hub. Per Gurman, it has been delayed multiple times and is unlikely to ship before 2027.

Reasons for delays:

  1. Apple Intelligence 2.0 needs to mature — the HomePod with display was designed to be a hub for Apple Intelligence, but the new Siri 2.0 is still rolling out and the device was originally designed for the older Siri architecture
  2. Pricing challenges — the device was reportedly targeted at $199 but the components are pushing it toward $299
  3. Software strategy unclear — Apple hasn't decided whether to use a new homeOS or adapt iOS

Expected specs (when it ships):

  • 7-inch LCD display
  • A18 chip
  • FaceTime camera
  • Six-microphone array
  • Thread + Matter + Wi-Fi 6E
  • HomeKit hub functionality
  • Apple Intelligence 2.0 with home-focused features

Expected pricing: $249-$299

Expected launch window: Likely 2027 (no specific date).

6. AirPods Pro 3 — already on sale since Sept 2025

The AirPods Pro 3 were briefly mentioned at the Sept 9 keynote but not officially "announced" — they have been shipping since September 19, 2025.

Specs recap:

  • H3 chip
  • Active Noise Cancellation 2.0 (2x better than AirPods Pro 2)
  • Adaptive Audio + Conversation Awareness
  • Heart rate sensor (PPG)
  • Body temperature sensor
  • Live Translation support (iOS 27 + AirPods Pro 3 = the new Live Translation feature)
  • IP54 sweat + water resistance
  • USB-C charging case

Pricing: $249 (same as AirPods Pro 2 launch).

Why no formal announcement: Apple already launched AirPods Pro 3 in September 2025. The Sept 9 keynote mentioned them only because of Live Translation integration with iOS 27.

7. Apple Watch Series 12 + Ultra 4 (announced, recap)

Both announced at Sept 9 keynote. Already covered in our Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Ultra 3 review.

What's the October 2026 Apple event likely to cover?

Based on Apple's pattern, the October event (mid-to-late October) will likely cover:

  1. M5 iPad Pro — the headline product
  2. M5 MacBook Pro — 14-inch and 16-inch refresh with M5 Pro / M5 Max
  3. M5 Mac mini — refresh with M5 and M5 Pro
  4. iPadOS 27 deep dive — Stage Manager 2, Final Cut Pro for iPad updates, Logic Pro for iPad updates
  5. macOS 27 release date — Sequoia successor ships October 27 or similar Monday
  6. Maybe Apple TV 4K refresh — if Apple wants to bundle it with the Mac/iPad event

There will not be an iPhone announcement at the October event (iPhone was September). There will not be an Apple Watch announcement (already done).

What about the Spring 2027 Apple event?

Based on Apple's pattern, the Spring 2027 event (March-April) will likely cover:

  1. iPhone 18 standard — the $899 successor
  2. iPhone Air 2 — the thin-and-light refresh
  3. iPhone 18e — the budget iPhone
  4. iPad Air refresh — M4 or M5
  5. MacBook Air refresh — M5
  6. AirPods 5 / AirPods Pro 4 — depending on cycle

The Spring 2027 event is where the standard iPhone 18 finally ships after being delayed from Fall 2026.

What about WWDC 2027 (June)?

WWDC 2027 will likely cover:

  1. iOS 28, iPadOS 28, macOS 28, watchOS 28, visionOS 28, tvOS 28 announcements
  2. Vision Pro 2 — possible launch window per current reports
  3. Apple Intelligence 3.0 — likely Gemini 3 partnership
  4. Apple's AR/VR strategy update — Vision Pro line + cheaper Vision headset rumors

What's the iPhone 19 / iPhone 20 outlook?

iPhone 19 (September 2027):

  • A21 Pro chip on N2P
  • C3 modem (Apple's third-gen cellular)
  • All Pro models get variable aperture (no longer Pro Max exclusive)
  • iPhone 19 Air replaces the standard iPhone 19
  • iPhone 19 Fold (iPhone Duo 2) ships same window
  • iPhone 19e for budget buyers

iPhone 20 (September 2028):

  • A22 chip — first Apple SoC with SoIC 3D packaging
  • Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip (replacing Broadcom)
  • All-Solid-State button design (no moving parts)
  • Under-display Face ID (no Dynamic Island)

These are based on Ming-Chi Kuo and The Information reporting. Apple has not officially confirmed any 2027 or 2028 products.

What about Apple's services roadmap?

Apple TV+:

  • Several new shows launching Q4 2026 and Q1 2027
  • Ted Lasso Season 4 confirmed (2027)
  • Severance Season 3 (early 2027)
  • F1 movie sequel in development

Apple Arcade:

  • 5 new games per month continuing
  • Major AAA title expected Q1 2027
  • Apple Arcade Plus tier rumored ($9.99/month, no ads, cloud gaming)

Apple Music:

  • Lossless + Dolby Atmos already standard
  • AI-generated playlists rumored for iOS 27.1 (October 2026)
  • Spatial Audio for Android (in beta)

Apple One:

  • Premier tier at $39.99/month (includes Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, iCloud+ 4TB)
  • Likely expansion to include Apple Intelligence 2.0 ($6.99/month iCloud+ Premier for AI)

Apple Intelligence:

  • 5 more languages in iOS 27.1 (October): Arabic, Hindi, Polish, Thai, Greek
  • 10 more languages in iOS 27.2 (November): Indonesian, Malay, Filipino, Vietnamese, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Urdu, Cantonese
  • Apple Intelligence 3.0 in iOS 28 (Sept 2027) — likely Gemini 3 partnership

What about competitors?

Apple's 2026-2027 roadmap has to compete with:

  • Samsung Galaxy S27 (Feb 2027) — Galaxy AI 3.0 with Gemini 3
  • Google Pixel 12 (October 2027) — Tensor G7, Android 17
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 / Z Flip 9 (July 2027) — Snapdragon 8 Elite 3
  • Xiaomi Mix Fold 6 (Sept 2027) — XRing O4 chip
  • Huawei Mate X8 (Q4 2026) — Kirin 9200

Apple's competitive advantage remains: silicon (A-series, M-series, S-series, C-series), ecosystem integration, and Apple Intelligence's tight platform hooks. The competitive risk is in regions where Apple is weak: China (Huawei dominance), India (Xiaomi/Samsung dominance), and the entry-level market (Chromebooks, low-end Android).

Bottom line

Apple's September 9, 2026 keynote was deliberately focused: iPhone + Apple Watch + AirPods + iOS 27. The major products NOT announced — M5 iPad Pro, MacBook Neo, Vision Pro 2, Apple TV 4K refresh, HomePod with display — are coming later. The October 2026 event will likely cover M5 Mac and iPad. Spring 2027 will cover the standard iPhone 18 + iPhone Air 2. WWDC 2027 will likely cover the delayed Vision Pro 2 + iOS 28.

For buyers in the market for any of these products:

  • Want it now: iPhone Air / 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max / Apple Watch Ultra 4 / AirPods Pro 3
  • Want it in October: M5 iPad Pro, M5 MacBook Pro
  • Want it in late 2026 / early 2027: MacBook Neo, Apple TV 4K refresh
  • Want it in Spring 2027: iPhone 18 standard, iPhone Air 2
  • Want it in 2027: Vision Pro 2, HomePod with display, iPhone 19, Apple Intelligence 3.0

The full Apple roadmap is the most ambitious in the company's history. The Sept 9 keynote was just the opening act.
