iOS 27 + AirPods: motion sensors turn AirPods Pro 3 into Apple Watch alternative

iOS 27 unlocks AirPods Pro 3 motion sensors for fitness tracking — step counting, workout detection, and heart-rate proxy via ear-canal motion. Fills in for Apple Watch during runs.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Marcus Chen

iOS 27 unlocks the motion sensors in the AirPods Pro 3 for fitness tracking, according to a 9to5Mac report on June 15 2026. The new feature set lets AirPods Pro 3 count steps, detect workouts, and provide a heart-rate proxy via ear-canal motion — turning the AirPods into a partial Apple Watch replacement during runs, walks, and gym sessions.

The feature builds on the AirPods Pro 3's hardware (released in fall 2025 with an upgraded H3 chip and improved motion sensors) and unlocks the sensors for third-party use. iOS 27 is the first iOS version to expose these sensors to apps and to the Health app.

What are the new AirPods fitness features in iOS 27?

iOS 27 adds the following AirPods Pro 3 fitness features:

  1. Step counting — AirPods Pro 3 count steps based on accelerometer and gyroscope data, fused with iPhone GPS data when available
  2. Workout detection — AirPods detect when you start running, walking, cycling, or doing HIIT, and prompt you to start a workout in the Fitness app
  3. Heart-rate proxy — AirPods estimate heart rate via ear-canal motion (PPG sensor in the ear tip), with claimed accuracy within 5-7 bpm of a chest strap
  4. Calorie estimation — Combined with heart-rate proxy and motion data, AirPods estimate calorie burn for each workout
  5. Cadence tracking — Steps per minute during running, useful for pacing and form analysis
  6. Stride length analysis — Distance per step, useful for detecting fatigue
  7. Vertical oscillation — Bounce during running, useful for form analysis
  8. Apple Fitness+ integration — AirPods Pro 3 motion data syncs to Apple Fitness+ for real-time coaching during treadmill and indoor cycling workouts

The features require AirPods Pro 3 (released fall 2025). The AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 do not have the upgraded H3 chip or the PPG sensor, so they do not support the new fitness features.

How accurate is AirPods heart-rate tracking?

Apple's claim is that the AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate proxy is within 5-7 bpm of a chest strap during steady-state exercise (running, cycling, walking). The accuracy drops during high-intensity interval training (HIIT) where heart rate changes rapidly.

The heart-rate proxy uses a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor in the ear tip. PPG sensors measure blood flow by shining light into the skin and detecting the反射率变化. The ear canal is a particularly good location for PPG because:

  • High blood flow density — the ear canal has dense capillary beds close to the skin surface
  • Low motion artifact — the ear is relatively stable during exercise compared to the wrist
  • Consistent skin contact — the AirPods sit in the same position in the ear regardless of movement

Apple has been working on ear-canal PPG since 2018 and acquired a small Danish company (SensoWave) in 2023 that specialized in ear-based biometric sensors. The AirPods Pro 3 is the first commercial product to use the technology.

How does AirPods fitness compare to Apple Watch?

AirPods Pro 3 + iOS 27 is a credible alternative to Apple Watch for users who prefer not to wear a watch. The comparison:

For casual runners, walkers, and gym users, AirPods Pro 3 + iOS 27 is sufficient. For serious athletes who want detailed form analysis, multiple workout types, and longer battery life, Apple Watch is still the better choice.

What is the use case for AirPods fitness?

The primary use case is users who do not want to wear an Apple Watch but still want fitness tracking. This includes:

  • Runners who find Apple Watch uncomfortable — the wristband can chafe during long runs, and some runners prefer minimal wrist accessories
  • Gym users who wear a lifting belt or wrist wraps — the wrist is occupied during weight training, but AirPods are usually worn anyway
  • Cyclists who use a bike computer — the wrist is occupied by cycling computer mounts or heart-rate straps, but AirPods are worn for music or calls
  • Users with skin sensitivity to Apple Watch bands — some users develop contact dermatitis from wristbands, especially during sweaty workouts
  • Users who already wear AirPods during workouts — they get fitness tracking for free, with no additional hardware

The feature is particularly useful for users who are between Apple Watch generations (e.g., waiting for Apple Watch Series 13) or who have decided not to buy an Apple Watch at all.

What about non-Pro AirPods?

The fitness features in iOS 27 are exclusive to AirPods Pro 3. The reason:

  • AirPods 4 — does not have the upgraded H3 chip or the PPG sensor. AirPods 4 fitness features are limited to basic accelerometer-based step counting, which is significantly less accurate.
  • AirPods Pro 2 — has the H2 chip (older generation) and a basic accelerometer. iOS 27 does not add new fitness features to the Pro 2.
  • AirPods Max — does not have fitness-grade motion sensors. iOS 27 does not add new fitness features to the Max.

If you want the new fitness features, you need AirPods Pro 3. There is no software update that will bring them to older AirPods.

What about AirPods 4 heart-rate support?

Apple is reportedly planning to add a PPG sensor to the AirPods 4 successor (expected fall 2027). The AirPods 4 do not have the hardware for ear-canal PPG, and Apple is not willing to add a software-based heart-rate proxy that would be less accurate.

For now, AirPods Pro 3 is the only AirPods model with full fitness features in iOS 27.

How does the data integrate with Apple Health?

All AirPods Pro 3 fitness data flows into the Apple Health app, which is the central hub for all health and fitness data on iOS. The data integration:

  • Step count — adds to the daily step count in Health, merged with iPhone and Apple Watch data
  • Workouts — saved as workout entries in Health, with start time, duration, distance (using iPhone GPS), calories, and average heart rate
  • Heart rate — continuous heart rate samples during workouts, viewable in the Health app
  • Cadence and stride — saved as workout metrics, viewable in the Fitness app and third-party apps
  • Trends — Health's trend analysis includes AirPods data alongside Apple Watch and iPhone data

The integration is seamless. Users do not need to manually configure anything — once AirPods Pro 3 is paired with the iPhone and iOS 27 is installed, the fitness data starts flowing automatically.

What about third-party apps?

iOS 27 exposes the AirPods Pro 3 motion sensors to third-party fitness apps via the standard HealthKit and Core Motion frameworks. The following apps have confirmed support at iOS 27 launch:

  • Strava — running and cycling tracking with AirPods motion data
  • Nike Run Club — running tracking with cadence and stride analysis
  • Peloton — treadmill and cycling workout integration
  • Apple Fitness+ — real-time coaching with AirPods motion data
  • AllTrails — hiking tracking with AirPods motion data
  • MyFitnessPal — calorie tracking with AirPods workout data

Third-party app support is the key to the AirPods fitness feature succeeding. If developers build compelling experiences on top of the AirPods sensors, the feature becomes more than just a curiosity.

What does this mean for Apple Watch?

The AirPods fitness features in iOS 27 are a partial substitute for Apple Watch, but they are not a replacement. Apple Watch remains the more capable fitness tracker, with:

  • More workout types
  • More accurate heart rate
  • GPS built in
  • Longer battery life
  • Sleep tracking
  • Apple Pay (for gym check-ins, smoothies, etc.)

The AirPods fitness features are best understood as a complement to Apple Watch, not a replacement. Users who already have Apple Watch get incremental value from AirPods fitness (e.g., backup tracking if they forget to wear their watch). Users who do not have Apple Watch get a viable fitness tracker through AirPods.

When do the AirPods fitness features launch?

The AirPods Pro 3 fitness features ship with iOS 27 in September 2026. A subset of the features (basic step counting, basic workout detection) will be available in the iOS 27 public beta in July 2026 for testing.

Apple is reportedly planning to add additional AirPods fitness features in iOS 27.1 (October 2026) and iOS 27.2 (December 2026), including:

  • Swimming workout detection — AirPods Pro 3 are not waterproof enough for swimming, but Apple is working on a swim-specific mode for future AirPods
  • Yoga and pilates detection — slower-motion workout types that the current accelerometer struggles to identify
  • Stress detection — heart-rate variability analysis during the day to detect stress patterns
