iPhone 18 RAM: Kuo says 9GB standard, 12GB Pro (Aug 22) — Jeff Pu said 12GB unified (June 16)

Two credible analysts have published conflicting iPhone 18 RAM reports in the run-up to the September 9 keynote. Ming-Chi Kuo on August 22, 2026 said the iPhone 18 lineup will be split: 9GB on the standard iPhone 18 and 18e, 12GB on the Pro models, Air 2, and Fold. Jeff Pu of KB Securities on June 16, 2026 said the entire iPhone 18 family would be unified at 12GB.

Kuo's report is newer by two months and is the better read on what Apple will actually ship. This article compares the two reports, explains why Kuo is now the consensus view, and tracks which iPhone 18 models will ship with how much RAM.

The two reports agree on the Pro models (12GB), the Air 2 (12GB), and the Fold (12GB). They disagree on the standard iPhone 18 and the 18e — Kuo says 9GB, Jeff Pu says 12GB.

Why Kuo's report is more credible

Three reasons Kuo's August 22 report has become the consensus view over Jeff Pu's June 16 report:

1. Recency. Kuo's report is two months newer and incorporates supply-chain checks after Apple's late-June spec freeze. Apple's component allocations often shift between WWDC (June) and the late-summer production ramp (August). Kuo's report reflects the August state of the supply chain; Jeff Pu's reflects the June state.

2. The Apple Intelligence 12GB floor is real, but only matters for the most capable on-device model. Apple's documentation lists 12GB as the minimum for the most aggressive Apple Intelligence features (customizable Siri voice, advanced dictation accuracy). Jeff Pu's June report interpreted this as "all iPhone 18 models need 12GB." Kuo's August report is the more accurate read: Apple has chosen to run a smaller base Apple Intelligence model on the 9GB standard devices, with the two flagship-tier features gated to the 12GB models.

3. Component-cost pressure. LPDDR5X 12GB modules cost roughly $15 more per device than 9GB. Across 80-100 million units, that is a $1.2-1.5B cost differential. Kuo's report aligns with Apple's recent pattern of passing component costs down to Pro buyers while absorbing margin compression on standard models. Jeff Pu's "unified 12GB" report assumed Apple would eat the cost across the entire lineup — a stance that was plausible in June but less likely by August as Apple's margin discipline tightened.

Why Jeff Pu's report was wrong (or at least superseded)

Jeff Pu's June 16 report was based on early supply-chain checks before Apple's component allocations were finalized. It is not that Jeff Pu was wrong about Apple Intelligence requiring 12GB — that part is correct. It is that Jeff Pu did not anticipate Apple would run a scaled-down on-device model on 9GB to keep the standard iPhone 18 affordable.

Apple's compromise is consistent with how the company has handled previous feature gates (camera, display, always-on). Apple positions the most aggressive features as Pro / Air / Fold exclusives, then runs a "good enough" baseline on the standard model.

Apple publishes the official iPhone 18 specs on apple.com/iphone-18 immediately after the September 9 keynote. The page lists RAM alongside chip, display, and battery.
