iPhone 18 first-day setup guide: what to do in the first hour

Step-by-step iPhone 18 setup: iCloud backup restore, eSIM transfer, Apple ID, AppleCare+ activation, and which iOS 27 features to try first.

Last updated: (1 months ago)By Priya Raman

Setting up a new iPhone 18 is faster than it was five years ago — Quick Start, iCloud restore, and eSIM transfer are all designed for a 30-60 minute setup from the moment you power on. Below is the practical first-hour checklist for buyers upgrading to iPhone 18 on launch day or shortly after. Apple has standardized most of this, but a few decisions matter for getting the most out of the phone in the first day.

This is a step-by-step guide, not a feature tour. The goal is to get you from box to working iPhone 18 in under an hour, with the right features enabled.

Before you open the box: do these things first

Five preparation steps that take 15-20 minutes and save you 30+ minutes of setup pain:

  1. Confirm your Apple ID password. You will be prompted for it during setup. If you have two-factor authentication enabled (default since iOS 11), have your trusted device or phone number ready.
  2. Update your current iPhone to the latest iOS. Even if your current phone is on iOS 26, update to the latest point release. The new iPhone 18 may ship with iOS 27 and need a current iCloud state.
  3. Confirm your iCloud backup is recent. Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup. Tap "Back Up Now" if the last backup is more than a day old.
  4. Know your carrier account PIN. For AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile activation, you will need the account PIN during eSIM transfer. Most people forget this.
  5. Charge your old phone above 50%. Quick Start transfers between phones; both need to be charged.

Step 1: Power on and Quick Start (5 minutes)

Apple ships iPhones partially charged. To begin setup:

  1. Press and hold the side button (right edge) until the Apple logo appears. iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max all use the same right-edge side button.
  2. The phone boots into Hello with a sliding animation. Quick Start activates automatically.
  3. Bring your old iPhone close (within Bluetooth range, about 30 cm). The old iPhone detects the new one and prompts: "Set Up Up New iPhone."
  4. Tap Continue on the old iPhone. A blue animation appears on the new iPhone.
  5. Hold the old iPhone over the new iPhone, camera pointed at the new iPhone's screen. The new iPhone scans the animation.
  6. Wait for "Finish on iPhone [new]" to appear on the old iPhone.

Quick Start signs you in with your Apple ID, transfers Wi-Fi passwords, and starts the data restore. Total time: about 3 minutes.

Step 2: Apple ID sign-in and Two-Factor (2 minutes)

After Quick Start, the new iPhone prompts you for your Apple ID password (if not already cached on the old phone).

  1. Enter your Apple ID password.
  2. Approve the sign-in on a trusted device (your old iPhone, iPad, or Mac).
  3. The new iPhone trusts your Apple ID and is now signed in to iCloud, App Store, iMessage, FaceTime, Find My.

If you have two-factor authentication enabled and do not have a trusted device handy, you can use your phone number to receive the verification code via text message. Apple accepts any phone number on your Apple ID account.

Step 3: iCloud restore (15-30 minutes, mostly automatic)

After Apple ID sign-in, the new iPhone asks how you want to transfer your data.

Three options:

  1. iCloud Backup restore — recommended for most buyers. Downloads your apps, photos, messages, settings, and accounts from your last iCloud backup. Time: 15-30 minutes depending on backup size and Wi-Fi speed.
  2. Direct device-to-device transfer — faster for large backups (over 100GB) but requires both phones to stay close for the full duration. Time: 10-20 minutes for most users, but stays close for the whole window.
  3. Set up as new iPhone — for users who want a clean slate. Useful if you are switching from Android or doing a major reset. Time: 5 minutes for the setup itself, then you re-download apps.

Recommendation for iPhone 18 buyers upgrading from iPhone 17 or earlier: use iCloud Backup restore unless you have over 200GB of data, in which case direct transfer is faster.

Do not interrupt the restore. The phone will appear to be set up after the first 5 minutes, but the data continues downloading in the background. Closing out of setup early is fine; closing out of the restore itself breaks the restore.

Step 4: eSIM transfer (5 minutes)

iPhone 18 is eSIM-only in the US. Setting up cellular:

  1. During setup, the new iPhone prompts "Set up Cellular."
  2. Tap Transfer from Previous iPhone (or scan a QR code if you are not switching from an iPhone).
  3. Approve the transfer on the old iPhone when prompted.
  4. Wait 1-2 minutes for the eSIM profile to activate.

Your phone number moves automatically. The old iPhone's eSIM deactivates when the new one activates — you cannot have the same number active on both devices simultaneously.

For users switching from Android: scan the QR code your carrier provides or download your carrier's eSIM activation app.

For users on the iPhone Upgrade Program: the eSIM transfers automatically because the old iPhone's profile is associated with your Apple ID.

Step 5: Apple ID sign-in and AppleCare+ activation (3 minutes)

Once the iCloud restore is in progress, the iPhone prompts you to set up remaining features:

  1. Apple ID for iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Find My — already done if you signed in earlier.
  2. Touch ID or Face ID — if iPhone 18 has Face ID, the setup walks you through face enrollment. Hold the phone in front of your face and rotate slowly through two passes.
  3. AppleCare+ — if you have AppleCare+ from the previous device, it does not transfer. If you want to add AppleCare+ for the new device, you have 60 days from activation to do so. The setup flow may prompt you to add it during setup, or you can add it later from Settings → General → AppleCare & Warranty.

For AppleCare+ decisions, see our AppleCare+ FAQ.

Step 6: iOS 27 features to enable first (5 minutes)

Once the iCloud restore is in progress, the iPhone is functional but iOS 27 has new features you should enable:

  1. Apple Intelligence (if you want it on day one). iOS 27 enables Apple Intelligence by default during setup on iPhone 18. If you skipped it, go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Apple Intelligence and toggle on. Note: Apple Intelligence requires the GPT-5 integration, which may be opt-in for the first 30-60 days.
  2. StandBy Mode. Available on iPhone 18 (MagSafe charging required for full effect). To use: place iPhone on MagSafe charger horizontally. StandBy activates with clock, photos, and widgets. Configure in Settings → StandBy.
  3. Live Activities — if you use apps that support them, enable in Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Live Activities.
  4. Lock Screen customization — iOS 27 has new lock screen widget options. Long-press the lock screen → Customize to add widgets.
  5. Notification Center redesign — iOS 27 reorganized notifications by importance. To configure priority: Settings → Notifications → Prioritize.

Step 7: App downloads (15-60 minutes, automatic)

After the iCloud restore, iOS 27 automatically downloads apps that were on your old iPhone. Total time depends on how many apps you have:

  • 50 apps: 15-20 minutes
  • 100 apps: 30-40 minutes
  • 200+ apps: 60+ minutes

The phone is fully functional during this download — apps load from the cloud as they download. You can start using the phone immediately.

What to do if something goes wrong

Common first-day issues and fixes:

  • Restore stuck at "1 minute remaining" for over an hour. Force restart (volume up, volume down, hold side button until Apple logo). Resume restore from Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  • eSIM not transferring. Contact your carrier for a new eSIM activation. Most carriers can issue one remotely via their app.
  • Apple ID two-factor not working. Use the "Get a code code via SMS" option at sign-in.
  • Apps not downloading. Sign out of App Store and back in. Settings → [your name] → Sign Out. Sign back in.
  • Phone gets hot during restore. Normal. The phone is doing intensive data transfer work. Once restore completes, heat should drop.

What NOT to do on day one

Four mistakes to avoid:

  1. Do not update to the latest iOS point release immediately. Apple ships iPhones with the launch iOS build. iOS 27.0.x. Wait at 1-2 weeks before updating to 27.1 to let early-bug reports surface.
  2. Do not restore from an outdated iCloud backup. If your last iCloud backup is more than a week old, manually trigger a fresh backup on your old iPhone before starting the new phone's restore.
  3. Do not enable every Apple Intelligence feature immediately. Some features (writing tools, image generation) may have early issues. Enable selectively and check for problems.
  4. Do not transfer your old case. iPhone 18 cases are not interchangeable with iPhone 17. Buy a new case or check your iPhone 17 case fit (most Pro models will not fit due to camera module changes).

What to do in the first week

After setup is complete, three things to check:

  1. Verify all your accounts work. iCloud email, work email, banking apps with 2FA, etc. The restore pulls accounts from iCloud, but 2FA challenges may need re-verification.
  2. Test the variable-aperture camera (if you have iPhone 18 Pro Max). Try photographing a landscape in bright daylight — the iris should engage. Compare with iPhone 17 Pro Max side by side to see the depth-of-field difference.
  3. Set up Face ID with sunglasses and a mask if you wear either. Face ID has a separate enrollment path for sunglasses / mask if you find regular Face ID struggles.
