Three iPhone 18 Pro features we are already excited about, two months before launch

The iPhone 18 Pro is roughly two months from launch, and the rumor cycle has settled enough that we can point at three specific upgrades that have the strongest signal and the highest impact on day-to-day use. The A20 Pro chip on TSMC's 2nm process, the enlarged Main camera module, and iOS 27 Apple Intelligence are individually strong - together, they make the 18 Pro the first iPhone generation in three years that is not a "skip" year for owners of a 16 Pro or 17 Pro.

Here is the case for each.

1. The A20 Pro chip on TSMC N2, with WMCM packaging

The A20 Pro is the first iPhone SoC on TSMC's 2nm N2 process, and the first Apple-designed chip to use WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging. The combination is more meaningful than a typical year-over-year process shrink.

The N2 process delivers a roughly 15-20% performance uplift at the same power, or a 30-40% efficiency uplift at the same performance, compared to the N3P process used for the A19 Pro. WMCM lets Apple mix and match chiplets on the same wafer-level package, which means the GPU, Neural Engine, and CPU clusters can be built on slightly different process flavors tuned for their workload, then assembled in a single package. This is the same approach AMD and Apple have used on the M-series Mac chips.

In practice, the A20 Pro should deliver:

• Faster sustained performance: The 17 Pro throttles under heavy load (gaming, video export) because of heat. The 2nm process generates less heat per operation, which means more headroom before thermal throttling kicks in.
• Better battery life at idle: The 30-40% efficiency improvement at low utilization is what shows up in real-world standby time. iPhone users on 17 Pro already report solid standby; 18 Pro should extend that by 1.5-2 days.
• Neural Engine headroom for Apple Intelligence: The A20 Pro is widely expected to ship with a 38-40 TOPS Neural Engine (versus 31 TOPS on the A19 Pro). That headroom is what makes the 18 Pro the first iPhone where all of iOS 27's Apple Intelligence features run on-device by default.

2. The enlarged Main camera module

Mark Gurman wrote in May 2026 that the iPhone 18 Pro will offer "some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup's history." On June 22 2026, Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital provided the first concrete dimensional detail: the Main camera module is enlarged enough to push the camera plateau 2mm thicker than the 17 Pro.

The most likely combination of changes behind the bump:

• A larger 1/1.12-inch or 1/1.0-inch sensor (up from 1/1.28-inch on the 17 Pro)
• A variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/2.8) on at least the Pro Max
• A larger OIS assembly to support the bigger sensor

For most users, the practical impact is roughly 0.5-0.7 stops of low-light improvement, plus more natural background separation in portrait shots. For video shooters, the combination of a faster readout sensor and a more powerful ISP means cleaner 4K 120p and the first credible 8K 30p on an iPhone.

The tradeoff is the plateau bump. The 17 Pro plateau was already the largest in iPhone history. The 18 Pro plateau will be larger still. Users who disliked the bump on the 17 Pro should be aware that it is going to get worse before it gets better.

3. iOS 27 Apple Intelligence finally has the silicon to run it

iOS 27 is the first iOS release where Apple Intelligence runs on-device by default for all major features. The iOS 26 release shipped with Apple Intelligence, but most of the heavy-lifting models had to fall back to Private Cloud Compute because the A18 and A19 Neural Engines were not powerful enough to run them locally. iOS 27's Siri AI, image generation, and on-device summarization models all require at least 8 TOPS of dedicated NPU throughput, and Apple's larger Foundation Model requires 12 GB of unified memory.

The iPhone 18 Pro has both. The A20 Pro's 38-40 TOPS Neural Engine clears the 8 TOPS bar with comfortable headroom, and the Pro and Pro Max are widely expected to ship with 12 GB of unified memory as standard (up from 8 GB on the 17 Pro base and 12 GB on the 17 Pro Max). The smaller iPhone 18 is also expected to jump to 12 GB, per a DigiTimes report summarized by MacRumors in mid-June 2026.

The user-visible difference:

• Siri AI runs locally: No round-trip to Apple's servers, lower latency, and the experience works in Airplane Mode.
• Live Translation runs on-device: The systemwide live translation feature requires the larger on-device model.
• Image generation in Messages and Notes: Earlier "Image Playground" features were server-backed; the iOS 27 generation runs on-device.
• On-device summarization: Mail, Messages, and Safari Reader all do summarization without sending content off the device.

The practical effect is that Apple Intelligence stops feeling like a beta feature. On the 17 Pro, Apple Intelligence often felt slower than the feature it replaced, because of the cloud round-trip. On the 18 Pro, the experience should feel instant.

What we are still uncertain about

Two things could change the picture before launch:

• iPhone 18 Pro Max-specific features: Some of the camera rumors (variable aperture, possibly the larger sensor) may be Pro Max exclusive. If the smaller Pro is held back on the camera, the value equation shifts.
• iOS 27 feature gating: Apple has historically gated the best features on the Pro model. iOS 27's Siri AI works on the iPhone 17 Pro, but some of the more advanced Apple Intelligence features may be A20 Pro exclusive. We will not know the gating rules until iOS 27 ships in public beta in July 2026.

For most users holding an iPhone 16 Pro or 17 Pro, the 18 Pro is the first generation in three years where the cumulative effect of the chip, camera, and iOS changes tips the "upgrade or skip" calculation toward "upgrade."

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in early September 2026, with shipping later that month.
