Buy iPhone Air: $1,099 — Apple's thinnest iPhone (now shipping)
iPhone Air is Apple's $1,099 standard iPhone (now shipping since Sept 19). A19 Pro chip, 6.6" ProMotion, Sky Blue/Light Gold/White/Space Black. Replaces iPhone 18 in 2026.
Apple replaced the standard iPhone 18 with the new "iPhone Air" at the September 9 keynote. The 2026 iPhone lineup is now: iPhone Air ($1,099), iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199), iPhone 18 Pro Max (~$1,299), and iPhone Duo (foldable, $1,999). There is no separate "iPhone 18" or "iPhone Air 2" model — Apple consolidated the standard tier into the Air.
iPhone Air starts at $1,099 (A19 Pro chip, 6.5" Super Retina XDR display, Sky Blue / Light Gold / White / Space Black). Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5:00 AM PT (per apple.com/iphone-18-pro listing). On-sale Friday, September 18, 2026.
The iPhone Air replaces what would have been the standard iPhone 18 / iPhone 18e. TSMC 2nm chip capacity allocation and Apple's split-launch strategy mean the standard-tier phone now ships in the Air form factor. The budget iPhone 18e is delayed to Spring 2027.

How much does the iPhone 18 cost?
The standard-tier iPhone in 2026 is the iPhone Air at $1,099, not the iPhone 18. Apple replaced what would have been the iPhone 18 with the iPhone Air (announced September 9, 2026). The full iPhone 18 lineup (per apple.com):
| Model | 256GB | 512GB | 1TB | 2TB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Air (new standard tier) | $1,099 | $1,299 | $1,399 | n/a |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | $1,399 | $1,799 | $2,399 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,299 | $1,499 | $1,899 | $2,499 |
| iPhone Duo (ships Spring 2027) | $1,999 | $2,199 | $2,599 | $3,199 |
Pricing above is confirmed at apple.com after the September 9, 2026 keynote. The original $899 iPhone 18 was replaced by the iPhone Air at $1,099 — Apple repositioned the standard tier upward and dropped the would-be $799 iPhone 18 from the lineup. Pro models did see a $100-$200 increase over iPhone 17 Pro, driven by DRAM shortages and TSMC 2nm production costs. The new 2TB tier on iPhone 18 Pro ($2,399) and Pro Max ($2,499) is a 2026 addition.
Where can I buy the iPhone 18?
Four main channels, ranked by recommendation for most buyers:
-
Apple.com / Apple Store app — the canonical source. All configurations, trade-in, Apple Card monthly installments, iPhone Upgrade Program. The Apple Store app is faster than the browser — it caches the cart locally and submits the order as soon as the pre-order gate opens.
-
Carrier stores (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular) — best if you are switching carriers or qualifying for carrier promotions (bill credits, trade-in bonuses, "free with new line" deals). Inventory is usually smaller than Apple's; flagship configurations sell out faster.
-
Big-box retailers (Best Buy, Target, Walmart) — usually carry unlocked and major-carrier SKUs. Same-day pickup at a local store is sometimes possible on launch day. Trade-in is less generous than Apple direct. Best Buy's launch-day Geek Squad setup is useful if you want help migrating your data.
-
Apple Authorized Resellers — small carriers (Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile) and third-party sellers. Useful if you are on a smaller MVNO. Inventory and pricing vary.
For most buyers, Apple.com or the Apple Store app is the right place to start. You can switch to a carrier activation at checkout, and you get the full trade-in and Apple Card discount.
What's the cheapest way to buy the iPhone 18?
The cheapest way to buy an iPhone 18 is usually a carrier promotion with a trade-in. Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program and Apple Card monthly installments are convenient but rarely the lowest sticker price. The cheapest realistic path is one of:
-
Carrier promotion with new line + trade-in. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile typically offer $800-$1,000 in bill credits when you add a new line and trade in a recent iPhone (iPhone 14 Pro or later in good condition). This is frequently advertised as "free iPhone 18" with the right trade-in.
-
Apple Trade-In + Apple Card Monthly Installments. Apple offers trade-in credit up to $720 for an iPhone 15 Pro Max in good condition. Apple Card holders get 3% daily cash back on Apple purchases, including iPhones.
-
Best Buy / Walmart unlocked at MSRP. If you do not want a carrier plan, Best Buy and Walmart sometimes price-match Apple and run launch-day promotions (gift cards with iPhone purchase, discount on accessories).
-
Refurbished iPhone Upgrade Program returns. Three months after launch, Apple starts selling refurbished iPhone 18 returns at a 15% discount with full warranty. This is the cheapest way to get a new-sealed iPhone 18, but it is not available at launch.
-
Wait 6-9 months. iPhone 18 prices drop $100-$150 in the secondary market by March 2027 and $200-$300 by summer 2027. If you are not committed to having the newest model, waiting can save real money.
For carrier-specific promotions and timing, see our how to pre-order iPhone 18 FAQ.
Which iPhone 18 configuration should I buy?
For most buyers: 256GB iPhone 18 in any color except the flagship marketing color. Specific recommendations by use case:
-
256GB iPhone 18 ($899) — for most people. 256GB is the new baseline storage tier and fits the typical mix of apps, photos, and video. This is the configuration we recommend for buyers who are not power users.
-
512GB iPhone 18 ($1,099) — for photographers and video shooters. If you record 4K ProRes video, shoot RAW photos, or keep a large local music library, 512GB gives breathing room.
-
iPhone 18 Pro ($1,099 starting) — for users who want the better camera system (48MP ultrawide, 5x telephoto), ProMotion 120Hz, and the A20 Pro chip. The price jump from iPhone 18 ($899) to iPhone 18 Pro ($1,099) is $200 — worth it if you use your iPhone as your primary camera.
-
iPhone 18 Pro Max ($1,199 starting) — for users who want the largest display (6.9 inches) and the variable-aperture main camera (exclusive to Pro Max in 2026). Best for media consumption and mobile photography enthusiasts.
-
iPhone Air 2 ($999) — for users who prioritize thinness and lightness over camera versatility. The Air 2 is the lightest iPhone Apple has ever made (rumored 145g vs iPhone 17's 171g).
-
iPhone 18e (~$599) — for budget buyers. The 18e has the A20 chip (cost-down bin), a 6.1-inch OLED display, and a single 48MP rear camera. It launches Spring 2027 — Apple's cheapest 2027 iPhone with Apple Intelligence support (except Custom Voice, which requires 9GB RAM).
If you are upgrading from an iPhone 14 or earlier, we recommend jumping straight to the iPhone 18 Pro — the camera and chip jumps are worth the price difference. If you are upgrading from an iPhone 15 or 16, the iPhone 18 base is enough — you will not notice the chip difference in normal use.
What colors does the iPhone 18 come in?
Apple has not announced iPhone 18 colors. Reporting (Bloomberg, The Information, supply-chain sources) suggests a five-color iPhone 18 lineup:
| Color | Notes |
|---|---|
| Black | Carried over from iPhone 17 |
| White | Carried over from iPhone 17 |
| Mist Blue | New, light pastel blue |
| Sage | New, soft green-gray |
| Light Pink | New, soft pink |
The flagship marketing color for 2026 is Mist Blue, replacing Cosmic Orange / Deep Blue from the iPhone 17. The other four colors are mix of new and carry-over.

Should I buy the iPhone 18 or wait for the iPhone 19?
Buy the iPhone 18 if you need a new iPhone in 2026. The iPhone 19 will not ship until September 2027, and the iPhone 18 gets every iOS 27 feature (Siri 2.0, Proactive Intelligence 2.0, Live Translation 2.0). Waiting 12 months for incremental improvements rarely makes sense.
The only good reason to wait is if you want the iPhone Fold (which is shipping in September 2026 with the iPhone 18) — but that is a different product, not a down-market iPhone 18 alternative. If you want a traditional slab iPhone, the iPhone 18 is the right choice.
If you are happy with your current iPhone (iPhone 14, 15, or 16), there is no urgency. iOS 27 supports all of those, and the iPhone 18 generation brings incremental improvements rather than a generational leap. Wait for the iPhone 19 if your current device is still meeting your needs.
For a longer-term upgrade analysis, see our should I wait for iPhone 18 FAQ or our should I upgrade to iPhone 18 from iPhone 16 FAQ.
Can I trade in my current iPhone for an iPhone 18?
Yes. Apple's trade-in program accepts iPhone 11 and later, with credit applied to your new iPhone purchase. Trade-in values (for iPhone in good condition, 128GB+):
| Trade-in iPhone | Apple trade-in credit |
|---|---|
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | up to $720 |
| iPhone 16 Pro | up to $620 |
| iPhone 16 Plus | up to $520 |
| iPhone 16 | up to $430 |
| iPhone 15 Pro Max | up to $570 |
| iPhone 15 Pro | up to $470 |
| iPhone 15 Plus | up to $370 |
| iPhone 15 | up to $300 |
| iPhone 14 Pro Max | up to $400 |
| iPhone 14 Pro | up to $330 |
| iPhone 14 Plus | up to $230 |
| iPhone 14 | up to $180 |
| iPhone 13 Pro | up to $250 |
| iPhone 13 | up to $160 |
Carrier trade-in promotions typically offer more than Apple direct ($100-$300 more for the same iPhone), but lock you into a specific carrier plan. Apple trade-in is unlocked and the credit applies as a discount to the new iPhone.

What if I cannot pre-order the iPhone 18 on launch day?
Three practical paths if pre-orders sell out or your configuration is unavailable:
-
Check Apple Stock at retail stores. Apple allocates a portion of launch inventory to in-store pickup. Use the Apple Store app to check store-level stock — flagship Apple Stores (San Francisco, New York, London, Tokyo) typically have the broadest selection.
-
Pre-order for delivery 2-3 weeks later. If launch-day delivery is sold out, Apple often has second-wave delivery slots available at pre-order time. These slots ship 2-3 weeks after launch but at launch pricing.
-
Wait for retail availability. Most retail channels (Best Buy, Target, carrier stores) get second-wave inventory 2-4 weeks after launch. If you can wait until early October, supply normalizes.
The iPhone 18 has been in production since July 2026 per supply-chain reporting, and Apple's pre-order launch inventory is typically 8-12 million units globally. Sellouts are most likely on Pro models in flagship colors (Burgundy iPhone 18 Pro, Mist Blue iPhone 18) in the first 24 hours. The base iPhone 18 in standard colors typically stays available through launch week.
For real-time stock tracking and what to do if you missed launch, see our how to pre-order iPhone 18 FAQ.
Should I buy an iPhone 18 now or wait for Black Friday deals?
Buy the iPhone 18 at launch if you want a 2026 iPhone. Black Friday deals in late November 2026 will offer $50-$100 off iPhone 18 unlocked at major retailers, but you will wait 2.5 months. If you can wait:
- November 2026 (Black Friday): $50-$100 off iPhone 18 unlocked at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon. Apple does not discount directly but partners do.
- January-March 2027: Refurbished iPhone 18 starts appearing on Apple's refurbished store at 15% off with full warranty.
- May 2027 (Memorial Day): $100-$150 off iPhone 18 unlocked at major retailers.
- September 2027 (iPhone 19 launch): iPhone 18 gets discontinued by Apple, and resellers discount remaining stock by $200-$300.
If you have a working iPhone right now, the rational move is to wait until the iPhone 19 launch in September 2027 and get a discounted iPhone 18 then. If your current iPhone is broken or you need a new device urgently, buy the iPhone 18 at launch.
