Apple Intelligence on iPhone 18 supports more than 16 languages and integrates ChatGPT (GPT-5) as an opt-in fallback for Siri's most ambitious queries. The feature set is the same as iOS 26 but with several iPhone-18-specific additions including Live Translation in FaceTime and Visual Intelligence systemwide search. There are three things every buyer needs to know before launch day:
- iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max / Air 2 / Fold get every feature (12 GB RAM).
- iPhone 18 / 18e miss two features (9 GB RAM): customizable Siri voice expressiveness and advanced dictation.
- Apple Intelligence is region-locked. It does not launch in China mainland in 2026 and has limited rollout in the EU due to DMA restrictions.
Below is the full feature set, language support, regional availability, and how to enable Apple Intelligence when your iPhone 18 ships on September 18, 2026.
For the RAM tier differentiation that gates two features, see our iPhone 18 RAM tiers article.
The full Apple Intelligence feature set on iPhone 18
Twelve features ship with iOS 27 on iPhone 18. Nine are available on all models; two require 12GB RAM.
Available on all iPhone 18 models (9GB and 12GB)
- Writing Tools. Rewrite, proofread, summarize text in any app that exposes the standard text-editing menu. System-wide.
- Image Playground. Generate images from text prompts in a dedicated app and inline in apps that support it (Messages, Notes, Keynote, Pages).
- Genmoji. Generate custom emoji from text descriptions. Available in Messages and the keyboard's emoji picker.
- Visual Intelligence systemwide search. Search for content in any app using natural language — pull a date from a screenshot, identify a plant from a photo, look up a product from an image.
- Priority Notifications. Notifications are ranked by importance and shown in a separate priority section at the top of the notification stack.
- Image generation in Notes. Generate images inline in Notes using on-device AI.
- Live Translation. Real-time conversation interpretation in FaceTime, Phone, and Messages. Supports 16+ languages.
- ChatGPT integration (opt-in). When Siri needs help with a query it cannot answer locally, it can pass the query to ChatGPT (GPT-5) for cloud-side assistance. Opt-in — Siri prompts for permission the first time.
- Smart Reply. Suggested replies in Messages and Mail, generated on-device.
Available only on 12GB iPhone 18 models (Pro / Pro Max / Air 2 / Fold)
-
Customizable Siri voice expressiveness and pace. Adjust how Siri speaks — faster, slower, more emphatic, less formal, regional accents. Requires the most capable on-device model.
-
Advanced dictation accuracy. iOS 27 dictation with maximum accuracy in noisy environments. The 9GB standard iPhone 18 / 18e runs a reduced-accuracy dictation mode that.
-
Enhanced Visual Intelligence (Pro Max only). Pro Max exclusive — leverages the variable-aperture camera for better Visual Intelligence on document scans, business cards, and product lookups.
The full feature list above is what Apple published at WWDC 2026. The actual rollout may have minor adjustments at the September 9 keynote.
Language support
Apple Intelligence supports the following languages at iOS 27 launch (September 14, 2026):
| Language | Region(s) | Available at iOS 27 launch? |
|---|---|---|
| English | US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore | Yes |
| French | France, Canada | Yes |
| German | Germany, Austria, Switzerland | Yes |
| Italian | Italy, Switzerland | Yes |
| Portuguese | Brazil | Yes |
| Spanish | Spain, Latin America, US | Yes |
| Japanese | Japan | Yes |
| Korean | South Korea | Yes |
| Chinese (Simplified) | China, Singapore | Yes |
| Chinese (Traditional) | Taiwan, Hong Kong | Yes |
| Danish | Denmark | Yes |
| Dutch | Netherlands, Belgium | Yes |
| Norwegian | Norway | Yes |
| Portuguese (Portugal) | Portugal | Yes |
| Swedish | Sweden | Yes |
| Turkish | Turkey | Yes |
| Vietnamese | Vietnam | Yes |
The total is 16 languages at launch, with regional variants adding a few more (e.g., English India vs English UK may have different default styles).
Note that language availability is not the same as regional availability. Spanish is supported as a language everywhere, but Apple Intelligence features may not be available in EU countries due to regulatory restrictions — see the regional section below.
Regional availability
The trickiest part of Apple Intelligence for iPhone 18 buyers: even if your language is supported, your region may not be.
Tier 1: Full Apple Intelligence (all features)
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Canada (English and French)
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Ireland
Tier 2: Apple Intelligence (with DMA limits)
- European Union — Apple Intelligence features launch but several features are gated by the Digital Markets Act:
- Customizable Siri voice expressiveness and pace — delayed in EU (Apple has not committed to a launch date)
- ChatGPT integration — delayed in EU
- Live Translation in Messages — delayed in EU
- All other features — available in EU at launch
Tier 3: Apple Intelligence (delayed or partial)
- Japan — Partial Apple Intelligence at iOS 27 launch. Some features gated to 12GB devices.
- South Korea — Partial Apple Intelligence at launch. Korean language support was added in iOS 18.4.
- Singapore — Full Apple Intelligence (English region).
Tier 4: Apple Intelligence not available at launch
- China mainland — Apple Intelligence is NOT available in mainland China in 2026. This is due to regulatory requirements around generative AI services (which require local licenses and government approval). Apple has not committed to a China launch date. iPhone 18 buyers in mainland China will get the iPhone hardware but the Apple Intelligence features will be off.
- India — Hindi language support has not been added. Apple Intelligence is available in English only in India. Full feature set.
- Russia — Apple has paused most Apple services in Russia. Apple Intelligence is not available.
For buyers in China, this is a significant consideration — the iPhone 18 hardware is identical, but Apple Intelligence (the headline iOS 27 feature) is unavailable.
How to check regional availability
When you set up iPhone 18, the Apple Intelligence setup screen shows the supported features for your region. If a feature is unavailable, it will not appear in the toggle.
How to enable Apple Intelligence
Three steps when your iPhone 18 ships:
- Update to iOS 27. iOS 27 ships to the public on September 14, 2026 (per our iOS 27 release article). iPhone 18 ships with iOS 27 pre-installed on September 18.
- Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Apple Intelligence. Toggle on. Apple may require a Wi-Fi connection for the initial on-device model download (~7GB for the full feature set).
- Wait for the on-device models to download. First-time setup downloads Apple's on-device foundation models. This takes 5-15 minutes depending on connection speed.
The ChatGPT integration is opt-in. When you first invoke Siri with a query it cannot answer locally, Siri will prompt: "Siri can use ChatGPT to help with this. Allow?" Tap Allow Once, Always Allow, or Don't Allow.
Privacy architecture
Apple's privacy claims for Apple Intelligence:
- On-device by default. Most Apple Intelligence features run entirely on the iPhone. Apple cannot see the content. This is the headline privacy story.
- Private Cloud Compute (PCC) for complex queries. When the on-device model cannot answer, Apple Intelligence can fall back to Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. These servers run on Apple silicon with the same privacy guarantees as the on-device model — Apple cryptographically verifies the software running on PCC servers. Independent audits confirm the architecture.
- ChatGPT integration is opt-in and explicit. ChatGPT queries are sent to OpenAI's servers, not Apple's. Apple does not see ChatGPT queries. OpenAI does not retain ChatGPT queries from Apple Intelligence by default (per Apple's agreement with OpenAI).
- No Apple ID data shared. Apple does not link Apple Intelligence queries to your Apple ID for advertising or training purposes.
For buyers in regions with strict privacy laws (EU, China, Japan), the privacy architecture is a major selling point. Apple's "no data sent to Apple" claim has been independently audited for iOS 18 and iOS 19 features; iOS 27 Apple Intelligence will likely be audited by Q4 2026.
The 9GB vs 12GB gate in detail
For buyers choosing between iPhone 18 (9GB, $799 rumored) and iPhone 18 Pro ($1,099-$1,199 rumored), the Apple Intelligence feature gate is a concrete difference:
| Feature | iPhone 18 (9GB) | iPhone 18 Pro (12GB) |
|---|---|---|
| Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji, etc. | ✓ | ✓ |
| Visual Intelligence systemwide | ✓ | ✓ |
| Priority Notifications | ✓ | ✓ |
| ChatGPT integration | ✓ | ✓ |
| Live Translation | ✓ | ✓ |
| Customizable Siri voice expressiveness | ✗ | ✓ |
| Advanced dictation accuracy | ✗ | ✓ |
For most buyers who use Siri occasionally, the two missing features are negligible. For buyers who use Siri daily as a productivity tool, the Pro is meaningfully better.

What to do if you are in China mainland
Practical options for iPhone 18 buyers in China:
- Buy the iPhone 18 in China. The hardware is identical. Apple Intelligence features are not available but every other iPhone 18 feature works. Most Chinese buyers are accustomed to using Baidu / Tencent / Alibaba AI services anyway, so the loss of Apple Intelligence is not as significant as it would be in the US.
- Wait for Apple Intelligence rollout in China. Apple has been working with Chinese regulators on generative AI approvals since 2024. No specific date is committed but a 2027 rollout is plausible.
- Use third-party AI services. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all available via web in China (with VPN). Siri's ChatGPT integration will not work in China, but you can use the apps directly.
What to watch after launch
Three things to monitor post-launch:
- EU DMA rollout. Apple has committed to launching the gated features in the EU in 2026. The exact date is unclear; expect a "later this year" announcement.
- China mainland regulatory approval. Apple Intelligence rollout in China depends on generative AI regulations. Watch for Apple Newsroom announcements.
- Apple Intelligence feature additions. Apple typically adds new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27.x point releases. Watch for iOS 27.1 (October), 27.2 (December), and 28.0 (June 2027 WWDC) for the next feature additions.
