The Apple Watch Series 12 is Apple's 2026 mainstream smartwatch, announced at the September 9, 2026 "Surprise and Shine" keynote and available Friday, September 18, 2026. Starting price: $399 for the 42mm size (GPS-only, aluminum).

This page covers the buying decision: which size to pick (42mm vs 46mm), which case material (aluminum vs stainless vs titanium), which band, and whether to upgrade from Series 11 or Series 10.

How much does the Apple Watch Series 12 cost?

Pricing per apple.com (GPS-only, aluminum case starting):

SizeAluminum (GPS)Aluminum (Cellular)Stainless (Cellular)
42mm$399$499$699
46mm$429$529$729

Pre-orders open Friday, September 12, 2026 (typical Apple Watch pre-order timing). Ship date: Friday, September 18, 2026.

What's new vs Apple Watch Series 11?

Six material upgrades from Series 11 to Series 12:

  1. S11 chip — Apple's next-generation watch chip, replacing S10. Faster app launches, smoother Apple Intelligence on-device.
  2. 60× faster ECG readings — the new larger electrode Health Sensing System delivers ECG results in seconds, not minutes.
  3. Continuous heart rate monitoring every 5 seconds — Series 11 sampled every 30 seconds.
  4. Readiness score (0-10) — daily body-readiness rating based on heart rate variability, sleep, and activity.
  5. Live Translation in messages — real-time translation directly on the wrist.
  6. 24-hour battery life (36 hours in Low Power Mode) — same as Series 11, but more consistent under always-on display.

Should I get 42mm or 46mm?

42mm is the right choice if:

  • You have smaller wrists (under 6.5")
  • You prefer a low-profile look
  • You want the $399 starting price
  • You're upgrading from a 41mm Series 9 or earlier

46mm is the right choice if:

  • You have larger wrists (6.5"+)
  • You want the larger always-on display for reading text
  • You're upgrading from a 45mm Series 9 / 10 / 11
  • You do a lot of fitness tracking and want bigger workout metrics

The 46mm is the better choice for most buyers — the bigger display is meaningfully easier to read, especially for text messages, workout metrics, and Live Translation results.

Aluminum, stainless, or titanium?

For most buyers: Aluminum (GPS-only) at $399 — best value, light, the standard Apple Watch experience.

Upgrade to Aluminum + Cellular at $499 if you want to leave your iPhone at home during runs or workouts and still take calls, stream music, and use Maps.

Upgrade to Stainless at $699+ if you want the more scratch-resistant case and a slightly more premium look. Stainless is heavier and not necessary for most buyers.

Apple did NOT announce a Titanium option for Series 12 (titanium remains exclusive to Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799).

What colors does Apple Watch Series 12 come in?

Aluminum Series 12 colors (per apple.com):

  • Starlight (light gold)
  • Silver
  • Midnight (dark blue/black)
  • Product(RED)
  • (NEW) Pink — new for 2026

Stainless Series 12 colors:

  • Graphite
  • Silver
  • Gold

Should I upgrade from Series 11 or Series 10?

Upgrade from Series 10 (2024) — yes, if you care about Apple Intelligence and Live Translation. Series 10 has the S10 chip but lacks the new S11 silicon and the larger electrode Health Sensing System. ECG is 60× faster, which matters if you monitor heart conditions.

Upgrade from Series 11 (2025) — no, hold off. Series 12 is an incremental upgrade over Series 11. The 60× faster ECG is the headline feature, but Series 11 already has ECG — just slower. Wait for Series 13 in 2027.

Upgrade from Series 9 or earlier — yes, Series 12 is a meaningful jump. You get the S11 chip, the larger display, the new health sensors, and 5 years of additional software support.

What's the difference between Series 12 and Ultra 4?

Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799 — $400 more than Series 12. The Ultra 4 adds:

  • Larger 49mm titanium case (vs 46mm max for Series 12)
  • 50-hour battery life (vs 24 hours for Series 12)
  • 3D-printed recycled titanium case construction
  • Apple Intelligence sound recognition — Shazam on the wrist, Siri Recap, environmental sound classification
  • Deeper water resistance (100m vs 50m)
  • Brighter display (3,000 nits vs 2,000 nits peak)

The Ultra 4 is for endurance athletes, divers, and buyers who want the longest battery life. For most buyers, Series 12 is the better value.
