iOS 27.1 released November 9, 2026: Apple Intelligence EU + Custom Voice GA + RCS Business Messaging
iOS 27.1 shipped Nov 9, 2026 with Apple Intelligence EU pack (7 languages), Custom Voice GA, RCS Business Messaging, Mail fix. Apple bundled 27.0.2 fixes into 27.1.
iOS 27.1 was released Sunday, November 9, 2026 as Apple's first feature drop of the iOS 27 cycle — 52 days after iOS 27.0 (Sept 18, 2026). The release includes Apple Intelligence 2.0 EU language pack (7 languages), Custom Voice GA (iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max only), RCS Business Messaging (US), Visual Look Up 2.0 EU, Wallet AI EU, plus the originally planned iOS 27.0.2 bug fixes (Cellular drops, Mail encryption crash, Apple Intelligence freeze, battery drain).
The release was delayed from the originally predicted October 14-21 window because Apple decided to skip the standalone iOS 27.0.2 point release and bundle the .2 fixes into 27.1. This was confirmed by Apple's internal Cupertino QA memo leaked to 9to5Mac in late October.
Why was iOS 27.1 delayed?
Three reasons Apple delayed the .1 release from Oct 14 to Nov 9, 2026:
- iOS 27.0.2 was rolled forward into 27.1. Apple chose to bundle the planned .2 fixes (Mail encryption crash, Apple Intelligence freeze, cellular modem drops, battery drain) into the .1 release rather than ship them in a separate .2 point release. This avoided fragmenting QA cycles with two adjacent point releases.
- EU AI Act audit added 2-3 weeks. The European AI Office (established Sept 2026) requested additional documentation for Apple Intelligence Custom Voice training data and on-device model behavior. Apple's compliance team submitted responses Oct 12.
- RCS Business Messaging carrier integration took longer. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon completed RCS Business Hub integration on Oct 24 (vs Oct 10 originally). This pushed Apple to align the RCS feature with the broader 27.1 release.
What's new in iOS 27.1
1. Apple Intelligence 2.0 EU language pack (7 languages)
First full Siri 2.0 + Apple Intelligence rollout in the EU. Languages added in iOS 27.1:
| Language | Code | Native name |
|---|---|---|
| German | de-DE | Deutsch |
| French | fr-FR | Français |
| Italian | it-IT | Italiano |
| Spanish | es-ES | Español |
| Portuguese | pt-PT | Português |
| Dutch | nl-NL | Nederlands |
| Swedish | sv-SE | Svenska |
EU-specific differences:
- Voice synthesis uses EU-trained voice models (not US models) for natural pronunciation
- Privacy routing to EU Private Cloud Compute (Frankfurt + Dublin data centers) by default
- Memory storage only in EU-resident storage; cross-region sync disabled
- Apple Intelligence requests never leave the EU even for system-level training signals
Languages NOT in 27.1 (delayed to 27.2 or 27.3): Greek, Polish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Finnish, Danish, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian.
2. Apple Intelligence Custom Voice GA (general availability)
Custom Voice exits beta and is available to all iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max users with 12GB RAM. Custom Voice lets you record a 1-minute voice sample, train an on-device voice model (~15 minutes), then have Siri speak in your voice for:
- Reading articles (Safari, News app)
- Voice messages
- Voice narration in iMovie / Clips
- Voice replies in Messages
Languages at GA: English (US, UK, AU), German, French, Italian, Spanish — 6 languages. Japanese, Korean, Mandarin arrive in iOS 27.2 (December).
Privacy: All voice sample training happens on-device. Apple never sees your voice sample or trained model.
3. RCS Business Messaging (US)
Rich Communication Services Business Messaging launches on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. RCS Business Messaging lets businesses send rich cards, carousels, suggested replies, and video messages to iPhone users via the native Messages app. Verified businesses get a checkmark icon next to the sender name.
9 launch partners (per Apple's developer docs): Apple Store, Bank of America, Delta Airlines, DoorDash, Hilton, Marriott, Starbucks, Uber, Walmart.
Comparison to iMessage: RCS Business Messaging is the Android equivalent — Apple's iMessage remains the richer protocol (encrypted + effects), but RCS Business works cross-platform between iPhone and Android.
4. Mail encryption crash fix (from .2)
The Mail app's IMAP/Exchange TLS encryption crash that was introduced in iOS 27.0.1 is fully fixed in 27.1. Apple included a comprehensive rewrite of the Mail encryption stack. Affects primarily enterprise users with corporate Exchange / IMAP servers.
5. Apple Intelligence freeze fix
The freeze bug (Siri/Apple Intelligence hangs for 30-60 seconds when processing complex requests) is fixed in 27.1. The fix covers both on-device and Private Cloud Compute paths.
6. Cellular modem drops fix (iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max)
Qualcomm SDX80 modem firmware 27.1.0 handshake failures with T-Mobile and Verizon towers in dense urban areas are resolved. Affects ~2-3% of iPhone 18 Pro users. The fix is in Qualcomm's firmware 17.2.0.
7. Battery drain fix
Standby battery drain (3-5% overnight) on iPhone 18 series is resolved. CoreLocation services bug patched. Battery drain during heavy Apple Intelligence use reduced from 18-22%/hr to 11-14%/hr on iPhone 18 Pro Max.
8. Wallet + Visual Intelligence fixes
Apple Pay NFC initialization failures on iPhone Air (~1%) and Visual Intelligence 2 camera freezes on iPhone 18 Pro (~1-2%) are fixed.
