The math is straightforward — and so are the caveats. Here's how the numbers line up, and where they could fall apart.
What do the leaked battery sizes actually tell us?
Two independent figures for the iPhone 18 Pro Max cell are now in circulation. The earlier social-media leak, picked up by 9to5Mac in early July, pegged the cell at 5,425 mAh on the eSIM-only variant and 5,235 mAh on the physical-SIM model 2. A regulatory filing published the same week and folded into MacRumors' roundup pushes both numbers slightly higher: 5,567 mAh and 5,391 mAh respectively 3. Either way, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is meaningfully larger than the iPhone 17 Pro Max cell at 5,088 mAh (eSIM) / 4,823 mAh (physical SIM) — between 6.6% and 9.4% more capacity, depending on which leak you trust. How much does the A20 chip improve efficiency?
The A20 Pro is widely expected to be the first Apple-designed silicon built on TSMC's N2 (2nm-class) process, packaged using TSMC's Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) layout 4. Independent estimates from TSMC put power-efficiency gains for a full node shrink at roughly 20-30% on the same workload, though Apple typically realizes a smaller slice of that in shipping silicon — call it 10-15% in real-world battery life for a chip running at similar performance. The packaging change is the harder variable: WMCM lets Apple mix and match CPU, GPU, and possibly DRAM tiles on a single wafer-level module, which can cut interconnect power but introduces new thermal and yield considerations. How many hours of video playback should iPhone 18 Pro Max get?
Apple's official figure for the iPhone 17 Pro Max is 33 hours of streamed video playback. Kuo's 35-37 hour estimate for the 18 Pro Max implies a 6-12% gain over the 17 Pro Max 5. That range is consistent with the battery-size jump alone: a 9.4% capacity increase (using the regulatory-filing 5,567 mAh figure against 17 Pro Max's 5,088 mAh) would, all else equal, buy roughly 3 extra hours. Layer in a conservative 5-8% efficiency gain from the A20's 2nm process and you land inside Kuo's 35-37 hour band. The honest framing: Kuo's number is the headline, and the leaked cell sizes are the only ground-truth capacity data we have. The A20 efficiency contribution is extrapolation, not measurement.
And the smaller iPhone 18 Pro?
For the iPhone 18 Pro at 4,288 mAh (eSIM) — about 84% the capacity of the 18 Pro Max — a straight capacity scaling puts video playback at roughly 29-31 hours on the same chip. Add the A20 efficiency bump and you land in the 30-33 hour range. The smaller Pro also has less thermal headroom than the Pro Max, which under sustained video decode could clip back a few percent of the gain; we're calling 30-33 hours the working estimate, with a wider error bar than the Pro Max number. Where the estimate could be wrong
Three things could move the needle off these projections. First, the stacked-battery design The Elec reported in May 4 changes the cell's internal resistance and thermal behavior — stacked cells typically run cooler under load, which can lift sustained video-decode efficiency, but the data isn't public yet. Second, A20 yields at 2nm are still ramping; if Apple ships a conservative bin on early units, the chip could throttle under extended video playback and shave real-world hours. Third, iOS 27's power-management changes, and any display upgrades (a brighter ProMotion panel, for example), could pull hours in either direction.
