iPhone 18 Pro Max component costs could jump by nearly $300, per Counterpoint

Counterpoint Research says NAND and DRAM costs alone for the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max will approach the iPhone 17 Pro Max's total bill of materials. Apple plans uneven price increases by storage tier.

The bill of materials for the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max will rise by nearly $300 compared to the 1TB iPhone 17 Pro Max, driven primarily by NAND and DRAM cost increases plus the new 2nm A20 Pro chip. The estimate comes from a Counterpoint Research report published on July 8 2026 and reported by 9to5Mac's Benjamin Mayo on July 9.

The most striking finding: Counterpoint expects the iPhone 18 Pro Max's NAND and DRAM costs alone to come close to matching the iPhone 17 Pro Max's entire estimated bill of materials across NAND, DRAM, processor, camera, display, and other components combined. That is how much memory pricing has shifted in the past year.

What is driving the cost increase?

Counterpoint breaks the cost drivers into three categories:

  1. NAND and DRAM cost increases (largest contributor). The 2025-2026 memory shortage — driven by AI-server demand and constrained supply — has raised memory component prices sharply. Counterpoint says NAND costs are rising significantly, followed by an equally notable jump in DRAM costs.
  2. 2nm SoC and packaging. The A20 Pro chip is manufactured on TSMC's 2nm process. The chip itself costs more than the A19 Pro, and Counterpoint specifically calls out the chip's "latest packaging" as another major cost driver — a reference to Wafer-Level Chip-Scale Packaging (WMCM) or similar advanced packaging required for the 2nm node.
  3. Variable-aperture Main camera. Counterpoint expects camera cost to "slightly increase due to the new technology." The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only 2026 iPhone with the variable-aperture Main camera, and the moving aperture blades add manufacturing cost beyond a fixed-aperture lens.

On the offsetting side, Counterpoint expects display costs and other components to drop. The display cost reduction is consistent with the M14 OLED panel generation maturing and Apple negotiating lower panel prices as production scales.

How much is the total BOM increase?

Counterpoint's estimate for the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max versus the 1TB iPhone 17 Pro Max:

  • Total BOM increase: nearly $300 (per Counterpoint's estimate, reported by 9to5Mac)
  • NAND + DRAM contribution: the majority of that $300 — enough that those two line items alone approach the entire BOM of the iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • 2nm SoC and packaging contribution: the second largest line
  • Camera: smaller incremental increase due to variable-aperture lens

For context, the 1TB iPhone 17 Pro Max retails at $1,599. A $300 BOM increase on a phone that retails for $1,599 is significant — roughly 19% of the retail price. Even allowing for Apple's typical margin structure (which absorbs BOM as cost of goods sold), a $300 cost increase is meaningful.

Why is Apple planning uneven price increases by storage tier?

Counterpoint adds an important detail in its report:

"Apple is expected to apply different retail price increases across different storage variants, to avoid the loss of gross profit on large-capacity models."

Translation: Apple is going to raise prices more on the 256GB and 512GB tiers than on the 1TB tier, because the 1TB tier already has the highest absolute margin and is where the BOM increase bites hardest. The pattern across the iPhone 18 Pro Max lineup, based on Counterpoint's framing and earlier Macworld battery report:

  • 256GB tier: standard $100 increase ($1,199 → $1,299)
  • 512GB tier: standard $200 increase ($1,399 → $1,599)
  • 1TB tier: smaller or zero increase on top of existing tier spreads, because the $300 BOM increase already eats margin if priced linearly

This is consistent with the existing apple-price-increase-2026-explained article's note that "the 1TB Pro Max saw a $200 increase, while the 256 GB Pro and Pro Max saw the full $100 increase." Apple is raising prices, but in a way that protects the high-capacity tiers where memory cost is the biggest component.

What does this mean for margins?

Counterpoint expects Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max margins to be slimmer than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, "despite an average retail price increase of $200." The combination of:

  • Higher BOM (especially memory)
  • Storage-tiered price increases (which limit how much Apple can raise the 1TB)
  • Camera and 2nm chip cost adds

means that even with a $200 average retail price increase across the storage tiers, Apple is taking a margin hit on the iPhone 18 Pro Max specifically. That is unusual — Apple typically raises prices to expand margins, not preserve them.

The likely explanation: Apple decided to absorb some of the cost increase on its highest-end phone because the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the flagship that drives the rest of the lineup's perception. Holding the line on the Pro Max price (relative to BOM increase) protects the brand and keeps the iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison favorable against the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

How this fits with the rest of the 2026 lineup

The Counterpoint report is specific to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but the memory cost dynamics apply across the lineup:

What to watch

Three things between now and the September launch:

  1. Whether Apple's actual iPhone 18 Pro Max storage tier pricing matches Counterpoint's expectations. If Apple raises the 1TB tier less than the 256GB tier (or holds it flat), that confirms the BOM pressure narrative.
  2. Whether memory pricing stabilizes in Q3-Q4 2026. Counterpoint's framing assumes memory costs continue to rise. If they stabilize, Apple's margin pressure eases in 2027.
  3. Whether Samsung and Google follow Apple's storage-tier pricing pattern. If the S26 Ultra and Pixel 11 Pro also raise the entry tier more than the high-capacity tier, the pattern is industry-wide, not Apple-specific.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold at an event in early September 2026. Shipping starts late September.
