iPhone 18 Pro Max vs Pro: Battery leak shows Apple is widening the gap between the two Pro models

A Chinese regulatory database leak shows iPhone 18 Pro battery barely changes, while iPhone 18 Pro Max jumps ~10%. Apple is differentiating the line harder than in years.

Apple is preparing to widen the gap between the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max more aggressively than it has in any generation since the line split, according to battery capacity data that surfaced from a Chinese regulatory database on July 5 2026. The leak, posted by Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station and reported by 9to5Mac's Ryan Christoffel on July 6, shows a battery capacity for the iPhone 18 Pro that is essentially flat year-over-year, and a Pro Max capacity that climbs roughly 10%.

If the numbers hold, the Pro Max is no longer just the larger screen — it is a meaningfully different device, with the kind of feature separation Apple usually reserves for a third or fourth model year of a design cycle.

What do the leaked numbers actually say?

The Chinese regulatory database, the same kind of source that accurately leaked iPhone 17 Pro battery capacities a year ago, lists the following four cells (according to Digital Chat Station's screenshot, summarized by 9to5Mac):

Two things stand out:

  • The iPhone 18 Pro gains roughly 1-2% over the iPhone 17 Pro (4,288 vs the 4,252 mAh iPhone 17 Pro). That is essentially flat — well within normal measurement noise and below the gains most Android flagships make year-over-year.
  • The iPhone 18 Pro Max gains roughly 9-12% over the iPhone 17 Pro Max (5,567 vs 5,088 mAh). That is a substantial jump — large enough that the leaker himself flagged it as needing "further verification" because the delta is so unusual.

Digital Chat Station's caution is fair. Two earlier leaks gave different Pro Max numbers: Macworld reported 5,425 mAh (eSIM) / 5,235 mAh (physical) on July 2 2026, citing social-media-traced data from a Tata Electronics breach. The new regulatory-database numbers are higher. Both can be partially right if Apple is running slightly different cells for different regional variants, but a 100+ mAh spread between two independent leaks for the same model is wider than usual.

Why does this matter for buyers?

For most of the Pro line's history, Apple has treated the Pro and the Pro Max as the same device in two sizes. The differences were screen, battery, and a small weight delta — nothing that meaningfully changed the daily experience.

The iPhone 18 generation looks different on three axes:

  1. Variable-aperture main camera is Pro Max exclusive (per multiple supply-chain sources, including The Information in April 2026 and Ming-Chi Kuo in February 2026). The smaller Pro gets a fixed f/1.4 lens, which is wider than the iPhone 17 Pro's f/1.6 but does not have moving aperture blades.
  2. Battery is widening into a real differentiator. With ~10% more capacity on the Pro Max, the gap between the two Pro models in screen-on time and standby jumps from "noticeable" to "significant." The Pro Max is now the right pick for power users in a way the Pro never was on its own.
  3. The Pro stays the smaller, lighter, more affordable option ($1,099 starting vs $1,199 for the Pro Max). For users who prefer a 6.3-inch phone, the Pro is no longer a "lesser" device — it is simply a different one.

That is a deliberate segmentation strategy. It is the kind of thing Apple has only done once before with the iPhone line: with the iPhone 6 Plus generation, when the Plus got optical image stabilization a year before the smaller 6.

How does this compare to the July 2 Macworld leak?

On July 2 2026, Macworld published its own iPhone 18 Pro Max battery figure: 5,425 mAh (eSIM) / 5,235 mAh (physical). Those numbers are 100-150 mAh below the new regulatory-database figures, but they are in the same ballpark.

The most likely reconciliation: the regulatory database numbers are final shipping cells, while Macworld's source was an earlier engineering sample. Apple often runs multiple battery cell variants through certification and picks one or two for mass production. The bottom-line conclusion — that the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets a substantial capacity bump — is the same in both leaks.

The one place the leaks disagree is the absolute number. If you are buying based on headline capacity, expect the actual shipping number to be somewhere in the 5,400-5,600 mAh range for the eSIM variant.

Does this change the upgrade calculus?

For users on iPhone 16 Pro Max or older, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is now the most defensible upgrade in the lineup: bigger battery, exclusive variable-aperture camera, and the A20 Pro chip in the same 6.9-inch form factor. The Pro Max's case is stronger than at any point since the line split.

For users on iPhone 17 Pro Max, the case is more nuanced. A 10% battery gain is real but not transformative. The variable-aperture camera is the bigger draw — and that benefit is also Pro Max-exclusive. If you shoot in a lot of mixed lighting (landscape daylight plus low-light interiors), the Pro Max is worth the upgrade. If you mostly shoot in one lighting condition, the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains a very capable camera.

For users choosing between the iPhone 18 Pro and the Pro Max, the decision is now more clearly about priorities than budget:

  • Pick the Pro if you want a 6.3-inch phone that is light, fits in one hand, costs $100 less, and you do not need the variable-aperture camera.
  • Pick the Pro Max if you want the best iPhone camera, the longest battery life, and the largest display — and you do not mind the extra 30-40 grams of weight.

What we still do not know

Three things to watch between now and the September launch:

  1. Whether Apple confirms or denies the regulatory database numbers at WWDC 2026 follow-up events or in the September keynote. Apple rarely leaks its own specs early, but regulatory filings in some markets are public.
  2. The actual weight and thickness of the Pro Max. A 5,567 mAh cell is larger than the iPhone 17 Pro Max's 5,088 mAh cell. If Apple keeps the chassis the same size, the extra capacity has to come from denser cells. If the chassis grows slightly, that is information about how Apple is balancing battery, weight, and component layout.
  3. Whether the Pro gets any other meaningful upgrades beyond the A20 Pro chip and the fixed f/1.4 lens. The current rumor picture has the Pro as a smaller, lighter, more affordable alternative — but a thin upgrade is also a possibility if Apple is pushing buyers toward the Pro Max.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the iPhone Fold at an event in early September 2026. Pre-orders would follow within a week, with shipping starting in late September.

Update July 9-21 2026: Two subsequent leaks have firmed up the picture. First, on July 9 a leaker shared dimensions for the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 240g weight and 9.00mm chassis depth (up from the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 221g / 8.25mm) — the heavier chassis is consistent with the larger battery cells above, and is reflected in our iPhone 18 Pro Max specs page.
