Physiology or Medicine 2026: Optogenetics

Awarded to: Karl Deisseroth (Stanford), Peter Hegemann (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), Georg Nagel (University of Würzburg)

For: Their discoveries of light-gated ion channels and the development of optogenetics — a technique that uses light to control the activity of individual neurons with millisecond precision.

What is optogenetics?

Optogenetics is a technique that combines genetics (introducing light-sensitive proteins into specific neurons) with optics (delivering precise light pulses via implanted fibers) to control brain circuits. Before optogenetics, neuroscientists could only electrically stimulate neurons — which affected all nearby cell types. Optogenetics lets researchers activate or silence specific neuron types with millisecond precision.

Discovery yearDiscoveryScientist
2002First light-gated ion channel (Channelrhodopsin-2, ChR2) in algaeHegemann, Nagel (paper in Science)
2005Demonstrated ChR2 works in mammalian neuronsKarl Deisseroth (paper in Nature Neuroscience)
2007-2010Development of inhibitory opsins (halorhodopsin, archaerhodopsin)Multiple groups
2010s-presentClinical trials for vision restoration, Parkinson's, depressionMultiple groups

Why optogenetics matters

Optogenetics revolutionized neuroscience and has implications for:

  1. Brain circuit mapping — understanding which circuits drive Parkinson's, schizophrenia, addiction
  2. Vision restoration — clinical trials (RetroSense / Allergan) for retinitis pigmentosa
  3. Cardiac pacing — light-based heart stimulation (no electrode required)
  4. Pain management — optogenetic inhibition of pain pathways in mice
  5. Memory research — activating specific memory engrams (Susumu Tonegawa's lab)

Physics 2026: IceCube Neutrino Observatory

Awarded to: Francis Halzen (University of Wisconsin-Madison) — sole laureate

For: Decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

What is IceCube?

IceCube is a cubic-kilometer neutrino detector buried 1.5 km deep in the Antarctic ice at the South Pole. It consists of 5,160 digital optical modules (DOMs) strung on 86 cables embedded in the ice. When a neutrino interacts with the ice, it produces a charged particle that emits Cherenkov light, which the DOMs detect.

ComponentDetail
Detector volume1 km³ (1 billion cubic meters)
DOMs5,160
Cables86 strings, each 245 sensors
Depth1,450-2,450 m below surface
Construction cost$279M (NSF + international partners)
Years of operation2010–present

Why IceCube matters

IceCube detected the first high-energy astrophysical neutrinos on Sept 22, 2017 (event dubbed "Bert" and "Ernie"). These neutrinos come from blazars (active galactic nuclei with jets pointing at Earth) — specifically TXS 0506+056, a galaxy 4 billion light-years away.

This was a historic first: the first time a high-energy cosmic particle was traced back to its extragalactic source. It validated a prediction made by Askaryan in 1962 that high-energy neutrinos could be detected via Cherenkov light in dense media.

Francis Halzen Francis Halzen — University of Wisconsin-Madison

  • Born: March 23, 1944 (age 82) — Tienen, Belgium
  • Affiliation: University of Wisconsin-Madison (Hilldale Professor of Physics)
  • Background: Theoretical particle physicist; principal investigator of IceCube since 1987
  • Key papers: 2006 Physical Review Letters paper on IceCube sensitivity; 2017 Science paper on first astrophysical neutrino detection
  • Awards before Nobel: Balzan Prize (2023), Dannie Heineman Prize (2014), Bruno Pontecorvo Prize (2018)

Chemistry 2026 — TBA (Oct 7, 11:45 CEST)

Announcement: Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 11:45 CEST (5:45 AM EDT) by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

Top candidates per Clarivate Citation Laureates (Sept 17, 2026):
