Meta is rumored to have two follow-on products in the pipeline after the Meta Ray-Ban Display ($799, launched September 30 2025): a Hypernova 2 successor to the Display, expected in 2027, and a consumer-ready version of the Orion AR glasses prototype, expected in late 2027 or 2028. Both products are unannounced. The information below comes from supply-chain reporting, Meta's own published research, and analysts who have seen the prototypes.

What is Hypernova 2?

Hypernova 2 is the rumored successor to the Meta Ray-Ban Display (codename Hypernova). It is expected to address the most common complaint about the current product: the monocular display. The current Meta Ray-Ban Display has a single 600×600 panel in the right lens only. Hypernova 2 is rumored to add a second display panel in the left lens, giving the user a binocular HUD.

What is Orion?

Orion is Meta's full AR glasses prototype, first shown at Meta Connect 2024. The prototype was given to a small group of developers and select press; it has not been sold to consumers. Orion is what Meta actually wants to build in the long run: a pair of normal-looking glasses that can render 3D content in your field of view and overlay digital objects on the real world.

The current prototype uses holographic lenses, custom silicon, and a wireless compute puck that clips to your belt. The prototype is thick, heavy, and has a limited field of view (~70°), but it is a real working AR device.

The roadmap is consistent across three independent reports: The Information (March 2026), Bloomberg (March 2026), and UploadVR's analysis of Meta's public research papers. All three say:

  • Hypernova 2 is on the roadmap for 2027 — high confidence
  • Orion consumer is on the roadmap for 2027 or 2028 — medium confidence
  • Pricing for both products is uncertain and depends on component costs

The risks are:

  1. Supply-chain delays: The current Meta Ray-Ban Display launched on time in September 2025, but production was constrained for the first 6 months. Meta has a history of slipping hardware timelines.
  2. Component costs: The holographic lenses and silicon for Orion are expensive. If the cost curve does not improve, the consumer price stays above $2,000.

What does this mean for the current Meta Ray-Ban Display?

  2. The Display is the right buy for 2026. If you are shopping today, the $799 Display is the right product. Hypernova 2 is at least 12 months away, and Orion is 18-30 months away at the earliest.

If you are considering waiting for Hypernova 2, ask yourself whether the second display panel is worth a $200-$300 price premium and a 12-18 month wait. For most buyers, the answer is no.

Will Meta still be the leader in 2027?

The smart-glasses category is getting crowded. The relevant competitors as of mid-2026 are:

  • Apple: No shipping product in the smart-glasses category. The Apple Vision Pro is a mixed-reality headset, not smart glasses. Apple's first smart-glasses product is rumored for 2027 or later.
  • Samsung: No shipping product. Samsung and Google announced a joint AR glasses project in 2025 but have not shipped anything.
  • Snap: Snap Spectacles (2024) are a niche developer product. Snap's consumer volume is a fraction of Meta's.
