iPhone 18 Pro supply: Apple confirmed 12GB RAM for all Pro models (Sept 9 keynote)
iPhone 18 Pro supply update (Sept 9): Apple confirmed 12GB RAM across iPhone Air, Pro, Pro Max, Duo. 1TB/2TB Pro Max tiers use QLC NAND (slower sustained writes). Burgundy sells out first.
Apple will launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold in September 2026 with constrained inventory due to a DRAM shortage affecting the A20 Pro production line, according to two independent analyst reports in August 2026. The constraint is meaningful enough that Apple is concerned about pre-order sell-through and retail stock drying up within the first weekend.
For buyers, the practical implication is simple: plan to pre-order on day one if you want day-one delivery, and be ready for shipping dates to slip by 2-4 weeks if you wait.
What is happening on the supply chain?
There are two reports, and they agree on the underlying direction but disagree on the magnitude:
Wayne Culpan (August 6 2026, via 9to5Mac) — TSMC is sitting on roughly $1 billion of unpackaged Apple processors waiting on DRAM delivery before they can be packaged and moved on to the next production step. The chips have been fabricated at TSMC's N2 node but cannot move forward without the DRAM modules. Culpan reports that Apple and its assemblers "remain confident that they can meet initial demand" but are concerned about wait times for online orders getting pushed out quickly and retail inventory drying up.
Ming-Chi Kuo (August 10 2026, via MacRumors) — Kuo disputes the $1 billion figure, saying Apple's processor production runs at least three months in advance based on memory availability, and that there has been no "dramatic scenario in which TSMC first built up US$1 billion of work-in-process and then had to wait for memory to arrive." Kuo's take: tight memory supply is real, but the $1 billion figure is overstated.
Where they agree: Apple is scaling back its 2026 hardware shipment plans across multiple product lines. Memory makers have been prioritizing AI data-center contracts (which are more profitable), leaving less capacity available for consumer electronics. The constraint is not limited to iPhone — Mac Studio, Mac mini, and MacBook Air have already been affected, and Apple raised Mac and iPad prices in June 2026 in part because of it.
Why does this hit iPhone 18 Pro hardest?
Three reasons:
- 12GB RAM across the lineup. The iPhone 18 generation is the first Apple lineup to ship with 12GB of LPDDR5X DRAM as standard. Higher per-unit DRAM consumption = more exposure to a global DRAM shortage.
- A20 Pro on TSMC N2 with WMCM packaging. The Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging — Apple's first use of the technique — combines the A20 Pro logic die and DRAM in a single package. This is more supply-chain-efficient in the long run but more fragile if any one component slips. If the DRAM side is constrained, the entire WMCM package output is constrained.
- Demand will skew toward Pro / Pro Max. With the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 reportedly delayed to spring 2027 (per our Apple split-launch strategy explainer), the only new phones at the September 9 event are the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold. Buyers who would normally choose the standard iPhone 18 will either delay their purchase or buy a Pro. Higher concentration of demand on three SKUs amplifies the supply-constraint effect.
How constrained is "constrained"?
Kuo's take is the conservative one: Apple is "scaling back" 2026 hardware shipments, but the headline $1 billion figure from Culpan is overstated. The realistic interpretation:
- Initial September inventory will be lower than recent iPhone launches — likely in line with the iPhone 12 launch in 2020, which had constrained inventory due to COVID.
- Pre-orders on day one are likely to sell out within hours, particularly for the iPhone Fold (which is a new product category with uncertain demand curves) and for higher storage tiers.
- Retail stock will be tight through Q4 2026 and likely not normalize until Q1 2027 — exactly when the standard iPhone 18 and Air 2 ship, easing overall demand pressure.
- The iPhone Fold will be the most constrained of the three, since it is a new product with no precedent for yield and is the most complex to manufacture. Expect Fold pre-orders to sell out fastest.
What does this mean for buyers?
For buyers in the market for an iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, or iPhone Fold:
- Pre-order on day one if day-one delivery matters to you. Apple has not confirmed the gate — reporting points to Friday, September 11 at 5:00 AM Pacific (the standard slot) or Saturday, September 12 at 12:01 AM Pacific if Apple shifts off the 9/11 anniversary.
- Set up your Apple ID, payment, and shipping address before pre-order day. The first hour determines allocation, especially for the Fold.
- Consider the iPhone 18 Pro over the iPhone 18 Pro Max if the Pro is sold out. Apple's supply planning typically favors the smaller Pro because the Pro Max's variable-aperture camera module is more complex to manufacture.
- Skip the third-party carriers if you want guaranteed launch-day delivery. Apple Store pre-orders historically allocate better than carrier pre-orders.
- Wait if you can. If you are flexible on launch timing, October or November delivery will be easier to come by than September 18. The price will not change.
For buyers in the market for a standard iPhone 18 (no Pro): wait until spring 2027. The standard iPhone 18 is expected to ship then (not in September), and Apple's full DRAM allocation will be more normalized by then.
For buyers in the market for a Mac Studio, Mac mini, or MacBook Air: this article is relevant to you too. The same DRAM constraint that affects iPhone has been affecting those product lines since spring 2026. Expect continued tightness through Q4 2026 and price stability rather than price drops on those lines.
Update August 22 2026: iPhone Fold is the most constrained iPhone 18 model
After the August 6-11 reporting on supply constraints, additional reporting in late August clarified that the iPhone Fold is even more supply-constrained than the iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max. Apple's "show but don't ship" launch strategy for the Fold:
- Unveiled at the September 9 keynote alongside iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max
- Pre-orders open in late September (later than the iPhone 18 Pro pre-order Friday)
- First US deliveries in late September to mid-October, with general availability not stabilizing until November
- ~7 million units planned for H2 2026 (well below iPhone 18 Pro volumes)
- Markets outside US and China may not see general availability until Q4 2026 or Q1 2027
The iPhone Fold is the most supply-constrained because it is the most complex to manufacture (foldable hinge + display) and uses the most DRAM per unit. Buyers planning to pre-order a Fold should expect a 4-8 week delivery delay even for US addresses. Full detail in our Fold show-don't-ship article.

- Culpan's claim: $1 billion of unpackaged Apple processors waiting on DRAM, sourced via TSMC supply-chain checks, reported by 9to5Mac on August 6 2026.
- Kuo's rebuttal: Apple's production planning runs three months ahead of memory availability, so a literal $1 billion WIP pile-up is unlikely. Memory allocation has been constrained throughout 2026, reported by MacRumors on August 10 2026.
- Apple's actions: raised Mac and iPad prices in June 2026; iPhone prices are expected to rise in September 2026. Apple's 12GB unified RAM spec across the iPhone 18 lineup makes this generation more DRAM-exposed than the iPhone 17 generation.
