iPhone 18 Pro Main camera upgrade 'confirmed,' plateau may grow 2mm or more

The iPhone 18 Pro Main camera will be substantially larger than the equivalent module on the iPhone 17 Pro, and the change is large enough to make the camera plateau measurably thicker, according to a new post from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, surfaced by 9to5Mac on June 22 2026.

Fixed Focus Digital, who has a credible track record on iPhone hardware details, said in a Weibo post that the iPhone 18 Pro line's Main camera upgrade is "confirmed" and that the change produces a more than 2mm increase in the "aluminum alloy back panel" - the metal backplate of the camera plateau. In a follow-up post, the leaker attributed the bump to an "enlarged main camera module."

9to5Mac's Ben Lovejoy frames it as good news: "In other words, the camera plateau may be getting even thicker this year than what had previously been rumored. Why such a significant increase? ... it's due to an Enlarged main camera module."

This lines up with what Mark Gurman has been saying

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote in his May 2026 Power On newsletter that the iPhone 18 Pro will offer "some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup's history." Until this Fixed Focus Digital post, the specifics were unclear. The 2mm+ plateau bump is the first concrete dimensional claim that fits Gurman's framing.

Two independent signals - a high-trust analyst (Gurman) describing the upgrade as generational, and a hardware-focused leaker (Fixed Focus Digital) reporting a specific dimensional change - put this above the standard "possible" threshold. The combination is why we have it as "credible" rather than "possible."

What "enlarged main camera module" actually means

There are three plausible reasons the Main camera module is getting bigger:

1. Larger sensor: The iPhone 17 Pro uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor for the Main camera. The 18 Pro is widely expected to move to a 1/1.12-inch or 1/1.0-inch sensor, which would increase light-gathering capability by 30-50%.
2. Variable aperture hardware: The Pro Max has been rumored to add a mechanical variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/2.8) for the Main camera. Variable aperture hardware takes more depth than fixed-aperture designs, partly because of the additional aperture blades and partly because the lens stack has to be physically longer.
3. Larger OIS assembly: Optical image stabilization on iPhone uses a sensor-shift mechanism. A larger sensor needs a larger OIS cage, which adds both z-height and footprint.

The 2mm plateau bump is consistent with a combination of (1) and (2). A sensor swap alone might only add 0.5-1.0mm, but adding a variable aperture ring on top of a larger sensor can easily push the total above 2mm.

What this means in practice

For photographers, the practical impact of an enlarged Main camera module is significant:

• Better low-light performance: A larger sensor with the same f-stop captures more light per frame, which directly reduces noise in dim scenes. A 30-50% larger sensor area at f/1.78 is roughly equivalent to 0.5-0.7 stops of improvement.
• Shallower depth of field at the same framing: A larger sensor with the same field of view uses a longer focal length, which produces more background separation. This is the "pro" look that the iPhone Pro line has historically had to fake computationally.
• Better video: Larger sensors read out faster for the same noise floor, which means cleaner 4K 120p and likely 8K 30p, both of which have been rumored for the 18 Pro generation.

For the design, the tradeoff is the 2mm+ plateau bump. Users who disliked the camera bump on the 17 Pro should know that it is going to get worse, not better, on the 18 Pro.

What is still uncertain

Two things keep this below "confirmed":

1. Fixed Focus Digital has not specified whether the enlarged module applies to the iPhone 18 Pro, the 18 Pro Max, or both. The variable aperture rumor has historically been a Pro Max exclusive, while the larger sensor has been described as a Pro-and-Pro-Max shared change.
2. The exact final thickness of the plateau will depend on whether Apple also redesigns the lens cover (the "glass plate" over the camera array). A redesign of the cover could add another 0.3-0.5mm on top of the 2mm module increase.

We will move this to "confirmed" if Apple leaks any official dimensional specs, or if a regulatory filing (FCC, Eurasian EEC, or Taiwanese NCC) lists the camera plateau dimensions before September 2026.

When to expect confirmation

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in the first or second week of September 2026, with shipping starting late September. The first hands-on reviews typically appear about a week before shipping, which will be the first opportunity to measure the plateau in person.
