Apple's supply chain has reportedly finished the factory renovations needed to build the "iPhone 20," and the 20th-anniversary phone is claimed to move to an all-glass design. The claim comes from the Weibo leaker "Fixed Focus Digital," in a post surfaced by MacRumors on July 14, 2026.1

This is an early, single-source rumor about a phone that is more than a year away, so we are filing it as speculative. But it is worth tracking, because a physical redesign is exactly the kind of thing Apple tends to save for an anniversary, and factory retooling is one of the earliest real-world signals that a new design is locked.

What is being claimed?

According to the leaker:

  • The "preferred approach" for the iPhone 20 is a return to glass for the body.
  • Build quality is expected to land "somewhere around that of the first-generation iPhone Air."
  • The relevant manufacturing facility has already been renovated and is waiting for machining to begin.
  • No specific supplier was named, though Lens Technology — which produces iPhone cover glass and previously absorbed metal-frame and glass-back assembly plants from Catcher Technology — is the obvious candidate.1

The leaker did not describe how much of the phone would be glass, whether it wraps the frame, or how Apple would handle antenna bands and structural rigidity — all of which are the hard engineering problems with any glass-heavy chassis.

Why an anniversary redesign makes sense

The original iPhone shipped in 2007, which makes the 2027 model Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone. Apple has a history of tying larger design changes to milestone years — the iPhone X arrived on the 10th anniversary in 2017 and introduced the notch, Face ID, and the edge-to-edge OLED design that defined the next several years.

A move back toward glass would also echo the iPhone 4 era, when Apple paired a stainless-steel frame with glass on both faces. Modern manufacturing (and the thin-and-light lessons from the iPhone Air) would make a more ambitious glass body more feasible than it was a decade ago.

How this fits Apple's 2026-2027 roadmap

Apple is widely reported to be splitting its release calendar: the iPhone 18 Pro line, iPhone 18 Air, and the first foldable iPhone are expected in fall 2026, with the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e following in spring 2027. This is a Weibo rumor with no corroboration from established supply-chain reporters. It would climb toward "possible" or "credible" if:

  1. A track-record analyst (Ming-Chi Kuo, Jeff Pu) or Bloomberg's Mark Gurman describes the same all-glass direction.
  2. Component leaks — CAD renders, glass-back tooling photos, or case-maker molds — appear closer to 2027.
  3. A second, independent supply-chain source confirms the factory retooling.

Until then, treat the all-glass iPhone 20 as an interesting early signal, not a confirmed design.

A MacRumors roundup on July 26 2026 aggregated additional reporting on the iPhone 20 design that adds specificity beyond the original "all-glass" claim:

  • Two anniversary models are now expected at approximately 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, matching the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max screen sizes — though the larger model could be marketed as a 7-inch device thanks to slimmer bezels.
  • Micro-curves, not aggressive "waterfall" edges. Apple is reportedly seeking equal-depth quad-curved panels with very shallow curvature, rather than the deep side-roll that Samsung used on Galaxy flagships. The visual effect may rely partly on optical refraction rather than physical curvature alone (per Ice Universe).
  • No display cutouts: Apple reportedly wants both Face ID and the selfie camera under the display. A "spliced micro-transparent glass" window would let the camera see through without a visible hole.
  • Solid-state haptic buttons (revival of "Project Bongo"): the Side button, volume buttons, Action button, and Camera Control would all be replaced by haptic equivalents integrated into the frame. The buttons have reportedly passed tests for use with gloves, wet hands, extreme temperatures, and with a case fitted.
  • Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has corroborated the mostly-glass, curved direction in his own reporting.
