Apple will debut at least 5 products at the keynote:

- iPhone Duo (Apple's first foldable iPhone) — book-style design, 5.4" cover / 7.6" inner display (per apple.com/iphone-duo/), Touch ID on power button (no Face ID), starting at $1,999 (256 GB). Pre-order Oct 16, 2026 5:00 AM PT; ships Oct 23, 2026.

What to watch between now and September 9
Five signals to monitor in the final 11 days:
-
Apple's pre-keynote briefings. Apple typically invites select press and analysts to Apple Park for closed-door briefings in the week before the keynote. Watch for The Verge, Engadget, and Marques Brownlee for early hands-on reports starting around September 5-7.
-
iOS 27 GM seed. Apple distributes the iOS 27 Golden Master seed to developers and carrier partners at or around the September 9 keynote. The GM seed is the final pre-release build that ships to the public on September 14.
-
Apple C2 modem coverage. The first Apple-designed cellular modem on Pro iPhones is a major story. Watch for technical deep-dives on Sub-6 vs mmWave 5G performance, power efficiency, and global carrier certification status.
-
iPhone Duo foldable supply. Apple's first foldable is constrained to roughly 7-9 million units for Spring 2027. Bloomberg, Mark Gurman, and Kuo will publish supply updates as the launch window approaches. US launch priority is confirmed.
-
Carriers and Best Buy pre-order pages. Major US carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) and Best Buy typically go live with pre-order landing pages in the week before pre-orders open. Watch for early-bird trade-in deals and bundle offers.
What to do this week (11 days out)
Five concrete steps:
-
Lock in your configuration. Storage (256GB / 512GB / 1TB / 2TB), color (Burgundy is the flagship — sells out fastest), and whether you want AppleCare+. Decide before pre-order day so you're not making impulse choices under time pressure.
-
Get Apple Card pre-approval. If you want 12- or 24-month financing, complete the Apple Card Monthly Installments soft credit pull this week. The process takes 60 seconds and saves time at checkout.
-
Decide your trade-in. Apple's trade-in program accepts iPhones back to iPhone 8. For iPhone 18 launch, expect roughly:
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: $700-$850
- iPhone 17 Pro: $650-$750
- iPhone 17: $450-$550
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: $550-$700 See our trade-in guide for the full framework.
-
Log into Apple ID and Apple Store app. Make sure your Apple ID, payment methods, and shipping address are current. Do this by Thursday, September 10 — that covers both possible pre-order windows — so you skip password entry at checkout.
-
Choose your storage size. Apple's 2TB tier is new this year for the Pro Max. For most buyers, 256GB is enough — but if you shoot a lot of ProRAW photos or ProRes video, 512GB or 1TB is the better long-term play. See our storage guide for the right tier.
What to watch on launch day (Friday, September 18)
Three signals on launch day to determine whether supply is tight or loose:
-
Apple Store inventory. Check apple.com at 8:00 AM local time on September 18. The most-popular SKUs (Pro Max 1TB in Burgundy) sell out within hours if supply is tight.
-
Apple Store walk-in lines. Apple Stores in major US cities (NYC Fifth Avenue, San Francisco Union Square, Chicago Michigan Avenue) form lines by 6:00 AM local time for launch day. Line length is a real-time signal of demand.
-
Carrier inventory. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile launch-day inventory is separate from Apple's. Carrier stores often have stock that Apple direct does not — useful if your preferred configuration is sold out at Apple.

What the "Surprise and Shine" tagline means
Apple's event taglines are wordplay hints at the keynote theme. "Surprise and Shine" reads on two levels:
- "Shine" references the invitation artwork. The glowing neon Apple logo evokes the Siri AI beta aesthetic from WWDC 2026. This visual hint suggests Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI experience will be central to the keynote.
- "Surprise" suggests an unexpected product or capability. The most likely candidates were the iPhone Duo foldable (Apple's first new form factor in nearly a decade) and the variable-aperture main camera exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max — both of which were unveiled at the keynote.
For comparison, prior Apple event taglines:
- 2025 (iPhone 17): "Awe dropping"
- 2024 (iPhone 16): "It's Glowtime"
- 2023 (iPhone 15): "Wonderlust"
- 2022 (iPhone 14): "Far out"
Standard iPhone 18 was replaced by iPhone Air; iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 are NOT at this event
The standard iPhone 18 was replaced by iPhone Air ($1,099) at the September 9 keynote — Apple's new standard-tier phone. Two iPhones are not part of the September 9 lineup:
- iPhone 18e — delayed to spring 2027
- iPhone Air 2 — delayed to spring 2027
Apple is using a split-launch strategy for the first time. The Pro models and foldable ship in fall 2026; the standard models ship in spring 2027. This is driven by TSMC 2nm chip capacity allocation and Apple's desire to give the foldable manufacturing enough breathing room. For the full rationale, see our Apple split-launch strategy article.
The biggest launch in years
The September 9 keynote will be the first iPhone launch under incoming CEO John Ternus, who takes the CEO role September 1, 2026 (Tim Cook transitions to executive chairman). Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has led hardware engineering since 2021. He is widely credited with the Mac silicon transition (M1 through M5), the iPhone Pro product line, and the AirPods redesign.
For background on the leadership transition, see our John Ternus Apple CEO transition article.
This is also the first iPhone cycle since 2017 to include a brand-new form factor (the iPhone Duo foldable, officially named at the September 9 keynote — pre-event leaks used "iPhone Fold" or "iPhone Ultra"), and the first iPhone Pro generation to use Apple's own cellular modem (the C2). Combined with the 2nm A20 Pro chip, the iPhone 18 cycle is the most consequential iPhone refresh since the iPhone X.
What happens after the keynote
Three things to do within an hour of the keynote ending (around 11:30 AM Pacific):
-
Check pricing and configurations. Apple publishes official pricing and AppleCare+ pricing on apple.com/iphone-18 within minutes of the keynote ending. We will update our pricing pages within the hour.
-
Read first impressions. Select outlets (The Verge, Engadget, CNET, Tom's Guide) get brief hands-on time in the demo room. Look for first-look posts and videos within 30-60 minutes of the keynote.
-
Cover both pre-order windows. Apple has not announced pre-order timing. Set an alarm for 4:55 AM PT on Friday, September 11 — Apple's standard slot — and if nothing opens, check again before midnight Friday, because a Macwelt report points to a 12:01 AM PT Saturday gate to avoid the 9/11 anniversary. Turn on Apple Store app notifications; they fire a few minutes ahead of either window.
